Strength Of The World

Last First Day

I stood in front of my full-length mirror and liked what I saw. I am the perfect combination of tall and skinny. On some it makes them look goofy but on me, it's pretty damn hot.
I was spinning around for the third time, trying to see how my butt looked in these new skinny jeans, when I heard my mom call from downstairs, "Jamie Sullivan! Get down here now and say goodbye to your father!"
I rolled my eyes as I grabbed my backpack. "He's not my father," I muttered. I went down the steps slowly, hoping to draw this out. It wasn't until my mother shouted my name again that I picked up speed.
At the open front door, I met up with mom and my step-father (I call him the step-jerk), Kyle. They had gotten married over the summer and I hated the man. He never tried to get to know me, he looked down at the fact that I could play drums (very well), and he hated the way I dressed. Kyle thought I should be more like my new step-sister, Cheyenne, who was pretty, blonde, smart and went to ballet and karate classes to keep in shape.
I heard him scoff as I walked towards him. "Really Jamie. It's the first day of your senior year. Shouldn't you at least try to put some effort into looking nice? Cheyenne looked great today. You two are the same size. Maybe you could--"
I held my hand up to interupt him. "Let me stop you right there. If you're thinking of saying go shopping with her, base my style off of her or (God forbid) borrow her clothes, then just keep quiet. Because I happen to love how I look and I wouldn't be caught dead in Malibu Barbie's clothes."
My mom said my name in an angry whisper, warning me not to go any farther, but I only ignored her. I was getting so fed up with Kyle putting down who I am and my mother not doing a damn thing about it. This was my senior year and I wanted to spend it my way, not Kyle or Cheyenne's way.
Kyle only placed a hand on his wife's shoulder. "It's alright, Karen. She doesn't know any better. She's a teenager that listens to the wrong music and hangs out with the wrong people. She believes she is supposed to talk to me this way."
My mouth dropped open. "Did you just call my friends, wrong?! How dare you?! You know nothing about them!"
"I know they dress wrong, listen to that insane music and are trying to get you into a band, which by the way, I do not approve of," he said as he prepared to walk out the door. "I don't even know why you would want to play the drums. That isn't a career."
"You told him?!" I said to my mom in disbelief. "That was between you and me."
She shrugged. "I keep nothing from my husband"
I glared at them both shortly before I pushed passed Kyle out the door. "Whatever!" I threw over my shoulder without turning around. "I'm not coming home tonight! I'll come back whenever!"
Before they could say anything, I started running (which is very hard in the heels I was in by the way) until I was at the end of the street where my best friend, Brianna Haner, was waiting for me. She rose an eyebrow as I got closer. "Two things," she said taking my arm. "One, you look faaaaantastic. And two, why the hell were you running? We're not gonna be late."
I rolled my eyes for the second time this morning. "Fucking step-jerk. He insists on trying to control my life and turning me in to his perfect little daughter."
Brianna rose an eyebrow at me. "What is wrong with that man? Doesn't he know you're perfect just the way you are?" she said rubbing my arm in comfort.
I rested my head on hers (I'm a little bit taller than her) "Thanks, Bre. He also said my friends and music taste is wrong."
"WHAT?!" she said before letting go of me and turning on her heel, headed in the direction of my house.
"Where are you going, Brianna?" I called after her.
She turned and started walking backwards. "I'm going to show that cunt loogie how 'wrong' I am when my foot's in his stuck up ass."
I laughed as i moved forward and caught her arm, pulling her back in the direction of our school. "Come on, you giant goofball. No need in stirring up anymore drama. I'm already going to get shit for not coming home tonight."
"Where are you goin'?" She asked.
I pushed her slightly before laughing and pulling her into a hug. "Your house, of course. Your parents have a fucking room for me."
Brianna nodded and smiled. "it was supposed to be a guest room but you stay there so often, you might as well move in."
I smiled at my best friend again. "I wish I could. Your father understands our music better than anyone."
Brianna shrugged. "Of course he does. He's the one who taught me guitar."
After that, I walked alongside her as she prattled on about how awesome our senior year was going to be and how we needed to find a bass player A.S.A.P for our band we had with our other two best friends, Maddy and Zoe. I nodded in the correct spots but my mind was mainly still on what had happened this morning.
Kyle had no right to talk to me that way. He had only met my friends twice. Once at the wedding and again last weekend at our semi-annual sleepover which was at my house this time. And my mother used to always be there for me.
She had always listened to my problems, help me and then cuddle with me on the couch to eat good ice cream and watch a bad movie. We hadn't done that once since Kyle moved in because she was "A married woman now and had a husband to provide for".
Bullshit. I was the only one who should be her priority. We were doing fine without that step-jerk.
About three blocks from the school, we were joined by another one of my best friends and bandmates, Zoe. She lived down the road we had just passed and she had probably been waiting for us.
"Sup, hoes?" She said as she joined us and pulled a cigarette pack out of her pocket.
"Hey, those'll kill you," I said.
Zoe rolled her eyes and spoke around the cancer stick in her mouth. "And...?"
"And gimme one, you stingey bitch," I said reaching around Brianna and grabbing a cigarette out of Zoe's hands. I sighed in relief as the smoke exited my lungs. I knew this was a disgusting habit and my mom would definately burn me alive if she knew I was smoking, but sometimes a girl needs more relaxation than music can give her.
Brianna stole the cigarette from me and took a long drag from it. "Oh sweet nicotine, where have you been all my life?!"
I laughed as i stole it back from her. "Your mom find your stash again?"
The four of us had been smoking since before our freshman year, but Brianna had the biggest stash of all of us. Most of the time she was good at hiding it, but whenever her mom found it, it was about a month before she got them back. "Ugh yes!" she shouted. "Yesterday. I had four packs and she took them all. It's not like I'm smoking weed. Se should be happy."
"She's a parent," Zoe said. "She's supposed to hate this habit of ours. My dad just kind of gave up on me."
"Well I just know if Kyle found me smoking, he'd shit a fucking skyscraper," I said finishing the cigarette off. "But if Cheyenne was caught, I know that him and my mom would just say 'oh poor baby was affected by the move'. What a load of bullshit."
When we got into view of the school, I could see our friend Maddy getting out of her boyfriend, Victor's car. After he locked the car, he pushed Maddy against it and started their routine makeout session.
I gagged as we walked up beside them. "Ugh you two were together all summer," I said grabbing Maddy's arm and pulling her away. "She's mine now, Vic."
He groaned and stepped in front of me, pouting. "C'mon Jamie. One more kiss before we part ways."
I heard mixed groaning and gagging coming from my friends. "Gross," came from Zoe and Brianna said, "Face it, Vic. We were here first."
Maddy laughed and reached around me to give her boyfriend a kiss. "I'll see you at lunch, babe."
Vic nodded, glared at me, then ran off to join his friends. I rolled my eyes. "You know, by the end of the day, he'll love me again," I said.
"Hands off, tall goddess," Maddy said in her deep voice. Maddy had this beautiful, deep, raspy yet feminine voice that made her singing sound phenominal. "That one is all mine."
Brianna came up behind us and wrapped her arms around both of our shoulders. "And his twin, Michael, is so mine."
Zoe laughed as she walked in front of us, backwards. "Not yet, Bri. You have to actually talk to him first."
"That's why I have Maddy," Brianna said. "She's going to do that for me."
I laughed as my friends bickered about boys. I loved all three of them like my sisters. Were were best friends and bandmates.
My senior year was starting out perfectly.
