Scars.

Twenty Three.

McKenna POV.
I fired questions at Syn as he herded me towards our bathroom.
“Where are we going?”
“How am I supposed to know what to wear, if you won’t tell me where we’re going?”
“Why are you being so secretive?”
“What the hell am I meant to wear?!”
“Were any of the others in on this surprise? Because WARNING would have been nice!” Eventually I gave up and huffed off into the bathroom to shower. I hit play on my iPod causing Papa Roach to blast out of my portable speakers. I switched on the Jacuzzi style shower and let the water heat up before stripping down and stepping into the jets of hot water. I let the hot water ease the tension from my muscles before grabbing my shampoo and thoroughly washing my hair. I massaged conditioner through it with my fingers then grabbed the soap. Once I was convinced that I smelt of the vanilla soap, I rinsed the conditioner out and stepped out of the shower.

I stared at my wardrobe, unimpressed and uninspired. I had no idea where he was taking me. I literally had no idea what to wear. I had no idea what to do with my hair, or my make-up. It was times like these that I wished Val was here. The door opened, making me scream and pull my bathrobe closed. Jesus, is there no such thing as privacy around here? Distinctly female laughter came from the doorway. I turned to see Val’s head stuck through the gap between door and doorframe. Relief flooded me.
“Sweet baby Jesus, am I glad to see you!” She laughed again and slipped in.
“Nice to know that I’m loved.” She replied, walking over for a hug. I waved her away.
“No time for that! I have a fucking fashion crisis.”
“You’re over-exaggerating Mac. And I am here, hence the end of the crisis.” I sighed and flopped backwards onto the bed, groaning.
“I am not over-exaggerating Valerie! This is our first ‘date’” I made air-quotes as I spoke. “and I want to look good and I want it to go well and I don’t want to fuck it up. Which I most likely will.” I rambled all in one breath. Val laughed again and began to flick through my wardrobe.
“Don’t forget to breathe there Mac.” She reminded me. I lifted my head up and treated her to a glare, only to be rewarded with another laugh. “You are so cute when you fret. Everything is going to be fine.” She paused in her wardrobe flicking to stare at me over her shoulder. She scrutinised me for several minutes before speaking.
“You shaved your legs?” I nodded. “Good.” She motioned for me to get up. I slowly, got to my feet giving her a suspicious look. “Your bra strapless?” I raised both of my eyebrows at her.
“Not currently, but it can be.”
“Excellent.” She nodded as I took the straps off my bra. I looked up just in time to see a dress flying towards my head.
“Thank you Valerie.” I mumbled as the fabric draped itself artfully across my face. I laid the dress on the bed and continued arguing with my bra strap.
“Welcome darling, welcome.” She chuckled, opening a drawer in the dresser and pulling out what looked like almost all of the make-up that I owned, plus a good chunk of stuff that didn’t belong to me. Having concluded my argument with bra straps, I turned to survey the dress that Val had thrown at me. It was an elegant black, cocktail-style dress. One that I had dismissed for being too fancy. The bottom was a slanting, layered hemline with slight, diamante detailing. While the top only had thin straps to hold it on my shoulders, hence the necessity for a strapless bra. I looked over at Val and raised an eyebrow.
“Isn’t it too…” I waved my arms about, looking for the right word. “extravagant?” She shook her head.
“Syn told me where he was taking you. It’s prefect for where he’s taking you, just trust me.” The look on her face told me that I wasn’t going to win this argument, and that she wasn’t going to crack and tell me where Syn was taking me. I hmphed and began to wiggle into the dress. Val smiled once I had it on and nodded. “My judgment is good. Now sit!” She ordered, pointing imperiously at the chair in front of the dresser. I sat.

~*~

“For the love of all that is holy, are you done yet?” I grumbled. It was nearly an hour and a half since Val had forced me to sit. She’d pounced on me with a fucking tonne of make-up, then begun to attack my hair. She’d straightened it, then curled it and begun to style it. Did I mention that she’d also covered the mirror? So I couldn’t even see what she was doing to me. Someone knocked on the door, making Val’s head snap up.
“What?”
“Are you done yet babe? Syn is going to wear a hole in the carpet if he paces anymore.” Matt’s voice called. Val laughed. I snorted.
“I’m almost done.” She yelled. I winced.
“Jesus woman, must you yell so loud?” She smiled and finished faffing with my hair.
“Ta Da!” She stood back and grinned.
“Am I allowed to see what you’ve done to me now?” She nodded and pulled the pillow case off the mirror. I froze. No way was that girl in the mirror me. Val had fixed the front sections of my hair, back and curled them, leaving the longer sections down and loosely curled. My make-up was light for me. She’d put light foundation on me, with light blush over my cheeks. Instead of my usual jet black, she’d done my eyes in a light, smoky grey which made the green in them stand out more than normal. My lips had been done in a soft red, making them bold and plump looking. I didn’t look like me. I stood to look at the dress. It hugged my figure, without being too revealing. I couldn’t believe how different I looked. I turned to Val who was grinning. She handed me a pair of black heels with small chains on the backs. I smiled back at her and slipped them on.
“You look amazing Mac.” She smiled.
“Thanks to you.” I replied hugging her.
“Come on, your handsome prince awaits.” I snorted and we both left the room laughing.

Syn POV.
Soft, feminine laughter filled the room as Val and Mac left our room. I sighed with relief and turned to face them. I thought that Val was going to make us miss our reservation. I froze as I saw Mac. She looked fucking beautiful. I could feel the blood pounding through my ears as my heartbeat increased. I swear to god, no other girl has made me feel like this. This alive, this in love, this happy. She bit her lip and smiled at me as I crossed the room to her. She stepped into my open arms, wrapping hers around my waist. I leaned in and pressed my lips gently against hers, my heart beating faster when she kissed back. Even if it was only for a few seconds before she pulled away, blushing. Everything about this girl had me falling even harder for her. A cough interrupted us before I could speak. Mac turned to look questioningly at Val, who was holding out a leather jacket.
“Here, you’re gunna need a jacket for later.”
“Thanks.” She grinned, taking the jacket from Val and shrugging it on. I slipped my fingers through hers.
“Come on. let’s ditch these losers.”

McKenna POV.
I finished my dessert with a regretful sigh. Damn that chocolate cheesecake was good. Syn laughed and took another bite of his banoffee pie. I eyed it, weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of stealing a bite. Or three. The restaurant that Syn had taken me to was an up-scale, swanky affair that made me glad that he’d told Val where we were going. It had a fancy French name that I had no hope of remembering or pronouncing, but the food was mind-blowingly amazing. Eventually I decided that it was definitely worthwhile stealing a bite of Syn’s pudding. I grabbed my spoon and reached across the table, cutting a corner off his dessert. He grumbled but didn’t stop me. Man that was good pie too.
“Enjoying my food?” Asked Syn, taking a sip of his beer. I grinned and nodded.
“Of course.” Syn set his fork down and sighed. “What’s up? Because if you’re not enjoying that, then I’ll enjoy it for you.” He chuckled slightly at my piggish ways.
“It’s not that Mac.” He looked up and met my gaze. “You look so fucking beautiful tonight. I can feel myself falling for you more and more every single second that I’m with you.” I bit my lip and looked down at the table, trying to control the blush that was burning through my cheeks. The table cloth rustled as Syn moved. I looked up to see him on one knee next to me, a small box in one hand. I felt my eyes grow wide. “It’s that, along with the advice of a very wise six year old, that makes me ask you if you’ll marry me.” He flipped open the lid of the box to reveal, a slender gold band with two diamonds flanking the most beautiful amethyst I’d ever seen. I felt my heartbeat race, the blush in my cheeks growing stronger as I realised that almost everyone around us stop and stare, even the waiters paused, waiting for my answer. I didn’t bother correct him by saying that we were already getting married. I grinned happily back at Syn’s mischievous gaze.
“You know that I will.” I replied. Cheers went up around us as Syn moved forward, cupping my neck with his hand and gave me the most tender kiss I’d ever had. He pulled away and slipped the ring on my finger. It fitted perfectly. I moved forward and kissed Syn again.
“Thank you.” I breathed, resting my forehead against his. “This was amazing.” He cut me off.
“No, you are.” I winced slightly at his cheesiness and laughed gently.
“I love you, Syn.” His grin was even wider than mine. That was, until he kissed me.
