Complicated Love

Drew

I had been to so many parties with the guys, but it had been so long that I had been to a pool party that I had to go out and pick out a new swim suit. After I got home from shopping, it was just about one o'clock and I had a message on my home phone.
I put my bag down and listened to it.
"Hey there, beautiful Brooke of mine."
My heart skipped a beat. Oh my God. It was drew. He had been the one guy whom I had dated that it almost lasted with. We had dated for almost two years when I had broke it off to go away to college. He was also the only one the guys couldn't scare away, and trust me, they tried.
I listened to the rest of the message. "I heard you were back in town, for good I hope. I would really like for us to catch up again. Please call me back. I've missed, Brooke."
He gave his number and the message ended. I sat down in one of my kitchen chairs.
Drew and I had once talked about running away together. I used to think I was really in love with him, but was I still?
Maybe I did, but I was just getting my life back into order. I couldn't really be in a relationship with him right now.
I got up and put my new suit away. I'd have to think about it later because right now I need some lunch. I was starved.
Just then the phone rang and I picked it up on the third ring. "Hello?" I answered.
"Brooke? Hey, it's Drew."
Oh great. I hadn't been planning on talking to him for a few days at least.
"Hi Drew! Oh wow, it's been a while," I said.
"Did you get my message? I called you earlier."
"Yes. I was just about to call you," I lied. "What're you up to?"
"Well," he said. "I was just about to go out to lunch and I was wondering if you would join me?"
I could feel my face getting hot and my heart sped up.
Calm down, Brooke, I said to myself. It's only lunch. Where's the harm in that?
"Sure," I said. "That sounds great Drew."
I heard him sigh with relief. He hadn't been sure of what I would say. "Awesome. I'll pick you up in about twenty minutes."
I hung up and put my head in my hands. I had just gotten home. What was I doing going out with him again?
But it was only lunch between two friends and that's how it was going to stay.

*********

"Really? Waffle house?" I said laughing.
Drew turned to me smiling from ear to ear. "It's where we had our first date. Remember?"
No. "Yes! Of course silly. Let's go in."
We were sitting in a booth and had already ordered when Drew grabbed my hand and held it. I looked down at our hands with wide eyes. Well that was unexpected.
I pulled my hand back and cleared my throat. "So," I began, "how have you been doing Drew?"
He sat back in his seat. It looked like he was sad but it was gone so fast I thought I'd imagined it. "I've been alright I guess. I've missed you alot. You never called or anything. Why was that?"
"Because I was busy with school, Drew." I sighed.
"I bet you called Jimmy," he mumbled.
"What did you say?" I asked.
"Nothing. Tell me, what're you gonna do now?" he said.
I rolled my eyes. At that time our plates came and I waited until the waitress was gone before I spoke again. "Teach. Kindergarten. I start on Monday." I didn't want to be here anymore. I was getting very uncomfortable now. That remark about Jimmy made me mad. You want me, you get my boys too. You don't get one or the other.
"Oh well that's good," he said.
It was a few minutes before either of us said anything. We ate in almost complete silence.
"Brooke, I want us to try again," said Drew.
I almost choked on my food. "What?
He grabbed my hand again, tighter this time so I couldn't pull free. "I want us to date again. I have missed you so much. And now you're back home we can start where we left off. What do you say?"
I finally got my hand free and stood up. "I say I better be getting home. I have a party to go to tonight. A welcome home party."
"Oh. Well can I go? I'd love to be your date." Drew stood also and threw some money on the table.
I sighed. He really couldn't take a hint could he? "Drew, I'm sorry you went through all this trouble but I just want to be friends. That's all. I'm not looking for a relationship just yet. You have to let me get settled into my new life first."
He looked down at the ground. "Sure. Yeah ok." He looked back up at me with a sad smile. "But you'll call me right? When you're ready?"
"Yeah. Of course," I lied.
Drew smiled and took my arm. "Well come on. Lets get you home."

No one on the site is wrong about her being a great author. Everyone has an opinion and you should respect it. I'm not saying this just because the author is my best friend, I'm saying this because everyone has an opinion and you kinda took the whole "constructive criticism" thing too far. I'm not sure if you meant it this way, but it came quite rude. Her stories all have a lot of views and great ratings. I don't think this entire site is wrong.
ok i have been reading this all day then i went through the comments. i have to be honest...i barely got through it. its hard to keep up with and the story isnt even very good. people saying that you are one of the best writers on here are wrong. ^.^ just saying
