Complicated Love

Lawyer

After I had hung up with Jimmy, I started to cry again. This so wasn't me. I wasn't the kind of person who cried over my problems. I got up and dealt with them.
So that's what I would do. My dad was a lawyer, he'd know what I should do.
I picked up my phone and dialed my dad's number. He answered after the first ring.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Hi daddy, it's Brooke." I said.
He was silent for a moment then he spoke. "Hey there, Brookie-bear. I haven't heard from you in a while. How's life?"
I sighed. "That's what I called you about, daddy. I was hoping you could help me."
"Tell me," he said in his business voice.
I told him about me starting this new job and about Principal Walker's threat. He was silent through all of it, listening intently. My dad hadn't been the best father around, but when it came to his job, he was the guy you wanted on your side.
"Ok, Brooke," he said. "You need to listen very carefully. Get a local lawyer, the best that's in California. I would do it, but I can't take it because you are my daughter. Tell him everything you told me and press charges. Walker will lose his job and you will keep yours. No harm will come to you."
"Thank you, daddy." I said.
"Of course, baby. Now, do I need to send money to you?"
I thought about what Matt had said about sending me some money so I could fix this. "No. I've got it covered."
I heard him sigh with relief. He hadn't wanted to part with any of his money even if it was for me. "Good, Brookie-bear. I have to go now. I love you and you let me know what happens."
"I will daddy. Love you too."
I hung up and grabbed my phone book. I needed to get this over with.
About an hour later I finally had the number for the best lawyer in Orange County. I called it and a familiar voice answered.
"Carter law firm, may I help you?" Drew said.
Oh shit! I hung the phone up quickly and put the phone down.
Drew was the best lawyer I could get? I had to get somebody else. Anybody else.
I reached for my phone to try and call another lawyer when it rang.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Well well," Drew said. "I knew you'd call me soon. Miss me, Brookie?"
"What're you talking about Drew? I didn't call you." I said trying to play dumb.
I heard him laugh. "Oh yes you did. You called my office, Sweetheart. Caller-ID is a wonderful thing don't you think? After you hung up, I looked it up and recognized your number."
"It was a wrong number. I needed a good lawyer and they screwed up and gave me your number." I said.
"Now what could you possibly need a lawyer for when you have your bodyguards to look after you, huh?" He said. I could hear the smile in his voice.
"Shut up Drew. It was a mistake to call you." I said before I hung up.
This was not what I needed right now. A strong drink was what I needed right now. Thanks to Jimmy and our trip to the store, I knew I had quite a bit of liquor in my cabinet.
I got up and headed for my kitchen. There I found some Jack and a shot glass.
A few shots later, I called Drew again. I know it was a mistake but I wasn't thinking very clearly.
"Carter Law Firm, how may I-"
"Shut up Drew!" I said. "Now you listen to me, fuckhead. I have a problem that needs to be solved and you're the best I can get. Now will you help me or not and can you be a fucking professional about this?"
"Brooke, you're drunk. I can tell." Was that worry I heard in his voice? Couldn't be.
"Of course I can be a professional," he continued. "What do you need from me?"
"My boss came on to me and threatened my job," I said as I took another drink from the bottle. "I need to press charges so I can keep my job. I need help from the best lawyer around and apparently that's you."
"So why did you have to drink before you asked me for my help?" Drew said.
I took another drink. "Because I rejected you and you hate my boyfriend and I needed some bravery if I was going to ask a jerk off like you to help me. Besides," another drink. "If Jimmy knew you were helping me, he'd have a hissy fit. So I will tell him when you are officially my lawyer. Will you help or not?"
Drew was silent and then I heard him sigh. "Yes Brooke I will help you. Mad at you or not, you were still the first girl I ever loved and I can't bear to see you hurt. I'll take your case and I will call you tomorrow. Be sober then."
He hung up and I threw the phone on the ground. "Take that," I said as I passed out.
I woke up a few hours later to a bad fucking headache and my phone was ringing awfully loud. I didn't check to see who it was before I answered. "What do you want?"
"Brooke? Are you ok?" It was Jimmy.
Oh great. I looked at my clock and saw that it was midnight. "What time is it there, Jimmy?"
"Eight in the morning. You didn't answer my question, Brooke. Are you ok?" he said.
I rubbed my head with my other hand. "I think I drank a little too much. My head is killing me."
"Why were you drinking? Don't you have work later?"
Oh yeah, work. "Yeah I do. I had to call the best lawyer in town to take my case. And that just so happens to be Drew so I needed to be brave while I talked to him."
I heard Jimmy sigh. "Really, Babe? Drew? Couldn't you get anybody else?"
I shook my head but forgot he couldn't see me. "No. I can't. He said he would be professional."
"He's only taking it because he still loves you, Brooke. Drew is no better than Walker. You need to get somebody else." Jimmy said.
"There isn't anybody else," I said. "It's either Drew or I lose my job."
"So lose it!" I could tell he was getting mad. "I can support you. You know that. I don't want you working with Drew."
"You're so jealous of him you'd rather see me lose my dream than fight for it?" I couldn't help it, I was getting angry at Jimmy for the first time. "Drew will help me. Because I want to work. I don't want to be supported by you my whole life! I want to do this on my own!"
I hung the phone up and turned it off. I had just yelled at Jimmy. I had just fought with him because he cared. I am a terrible person.
I ran for the bathroom and got sick.

No one on the site is wrong about her being a great author. Everyone has an opinion and you should respect it. I'm not saying this just because the author is my best friend, I'm saying this because everyone has an opinion and you kinda took the whole "constructive criticism" thing too far. I'm not sure if you meant it this way, but it came quite rude. Her stories all have a lot of views and great ratings. I don't think this entire site is wrong.
ok i have been reading this all day then i went through the comments. i have to be honest...i barely got through it. its hard to keep up with and the story isnt even very good. people saying that you are one of the best writers on here are wrong. ^.^ just saying

Omg, I absolutely loved this! (: Kayla should've gotten worse than what she got, but hey, at least Brooke got the guy in the end, right? (; This was amazing! Now, off to read the sequel!
