Life Starts Now

Awake ;

My head was pounding, no scratch that, it was worse then pounding. It felt as if someone was hitting it with a hammer every couple of seconds. I didn’t want to open my eyes, for fear of the light of the outdoor hallway blinding me temporarily. But alas, I didn’t feel as if I was still lying on the cold cement of the hall, but on a bed of sorts. There was always the possibility that I was laying down in the nurses’ office, but I couldn’t have been out that long right?

Against all of my better judgment I opened my eyes, which was a struggle at first, but soon they were wide open. I was in a bed, but the room I was in definitely was not the office. I was laying on a queen size bed that was underneath a window up against the center of the wall. A black comforter was tucked around me and all the pillows were stacked on top of one another to support my head.

I sat up, rubbing my eyes to see if I was hallucinating or something, but it was the same once I opened them again. There were band posters everywhere and clothes tossed lazily on the floor. I piece of notebook paper was taped onto the mirror a few feet away, on the side of a dresser. I slung my feet over the edge of the bed and stepped onto the hard wooden floor, reaching for the note.

I could tell it had been written by a boy, just by the handwriting. My face twisted in confusion, and I sighed before reading the note.

Hey Harper, It’s Jimmy from math class. I know you don’t know me, or my friends very well but we will explain the whole escapade once you wake up. Come downstairs, we have food!
-Jimmy.

I could feel my eyebrows trying to connect themselves together, but I shrugged. Standing up, I stretched a little before leaving the room. I turned to the right, and seeing that it was a dead end, I figured the stairs were the other way. I walked down the hall, which had pictures of a family who seemed to be rather wealthy. I reached the stairs, peeking down them slightly for any movement whatsoever before continuing down them.

Voices were coming from down the hall, deciding that’s were they would be, I followed the sound. A entry to the room was coming up, and I peeked my head inside, seeing the back of James’s head. I walked in quietly, taking more baby steps then anything.

“She’s awake!” One of the five boys in the room announced and I quickly looked at my socked feet. One was white with lime green and baby blue stars, and the other was black with pink and purple skulls covering it. I never matched socks, not that I couldn’t if I wanted to, I just didn’t like doing it. I mean, hardly anyone ever saw them anyway.

“Yeah,” I spoke quietly, “I am.”

It’s not that I’m not a loud person, I just tend to mumble around people I don’t know or am not used to being around.

James stood up and walked over to me, enveloping me in a hug, which both shocked and comforted me in a strange way. I tapped his back softly, the whole situation was bizarre to me. I barley knew anything about him except that he was in my math class, and he never was quiet.

“How are you feeling?” he asked me, pulling back from the hug but keeping his hands on my shoulders.

“Well, my head is throbbing and I hardly know any of you, I have no clue where I am, and the last thing I remember was some guy tripping me,” I explained to him.

“Come and sit, I’ll tell you what happened,” he said with a small smile on his face, “hey short shit, go and get her some Advil.”

“So the last thing you remember was being tripped by some guy in the hall way?” A buff guy, who I think was in my English class asked.

“Well, and Kevin coming up to me, but that’s pretty much where it’s going blank,” I replied.

“Well, what I know is that we were walking down the hall, on our way to talk to someone and you saw us and screamed for help. Then Kevin punched you so hard that you basically ricocheted off the wall and onto the floor. Matt,” James explained as he pointed to the buff guy, “ didn’t like that very much so he took him by the neck and slammed him up against the wall until he was unconscious. After that we took you here, to Zack’s house, and laid you down.”

“Well, thank you guys,” I said, smiling softly.

“Not a problem,” a boy, who I assumed was Zack smiled, his snakebites shining as the light hit them. I could tell he was genuine because his eyes agreed with his smile and statement.

“Short shit” walked back into the room, with a cup and a bottle of Advil in his hands.

‘Thank you,” I smiled, taking the glass and bottle from him. I allied the arrows on the bottle, and it popped open. I shook out three of the small blue piles and popped them into my mouth before downing the water.

“So, what do you want to do Harper?” A boy with hair that practically defined gravity and a nose ring asked.

“How about we go to the spot, and get to know Harper better,” James grinned, and it soon stretched all the way across his face.

“I think that would be a marvelous idea,” Zack smiled.
