Free Falling

Chapter Eighteen

I took a hunk of the spinal cord out and held it up, showing that there were wires inside it. "Did Karla take care of the eyes yet?"

"Yup," Karla smiled. "Nothing special with them from what I can see.

I nodded, then began to sever the spinal cord, attempting to track the wires. "They lead to the head," I pointed out, as Matt came in the room to see what we were doing.

I grabbed the snakes head to study it. I shook my head, when my eyes began to get a little blurry.

"I saw that," Karla scoffed.

"Wasn't a twitch," I muttered, rubbing my eyes trying to clear them.

"What was it then?" Alex asked, concern starting to form in her voice.

"My eyes," I put the snakes head down, and rubbed at my eyes more.

Alex sat me down on the bay window seat, then restrained my arms, as Karla looked into my eyes with a flashlight.

"You're eyes are getting silver," Karla said.

"Well you're blurry," I replied, trying to focus my eyes.

"How many fingers am I holding up?" Alex's voice floated over to me.

I looked in the direction of her voice. "I don't see anything,"

"Obviously," Karla replied, sarcastically. "Cause you're not even looking at her hand,"

"Awesome," I groaned, putting my head into my hands.

I looked around the room, only to see a white blur from the light. Standing, I took a step forward and ran into a chair. "Great," I seethed, as I reached for another chair, inching my way to the kitchen.

"Where are you going?" Karla asked me.

"To wash my eyes out," I answered, before running into someone. I briefly entered the persons mind to identify them. "Scooch over, Brian," I said maneuvering around him, then walked blindly to the sink.

***Matt's POV***

I walked into the dining room to see the girls busily working on the snakes insides. I still wasn't sure how they could stand looking at that, especially Ann after what she had been through.

Ann was talking about wires inside the spinal cord of the snake, which kind of baffled me. Why were there wires in a snake?

"Did Karla take care of the eyes yet?" Ann asked, while examining the section of spinal cord she had just removed.

"Yup," Karla replied happily. "Nothing special with them, from what I can see,"

Ann nodded as she followed the spine up to where the head was severed off. Ann took the head and studied it for a couple seconds. She shook her head, making Karla smirk.

"It wasn't a twitch," Ann muttered, rubbing her eye.

"What was it then?"
Alex asked, concern laced in her words.

"My eyes," Ann rubbed more vigorously at her eyes.

Alex quickly sat Ann down on the bay window seat, then pinned Ann's hands to her sides. Karla came over, and shined a flashlight in Ann's eyes.

"You're eyes are getting silver," Karla noted, as some of the light glinted off of Ann's eyes.

"Well, you're blurry," Ann replied, balling her hands into fists.

"How many fingers am I holding up?" Alex asked, holding up three fingers.

"I don't see anything," Ann replied, looking towards Alex.

"Obviously," Karla rolled her eyes. "Cause you're not even looking at her hand,"

Ann put her head into her hands groaning. She attempted to look around the room, before standing, then walked forward only to run into a chair.

She somehow was able to make it to the kitchen where she ran into Brian. "Scooch over, Brian," Ann maneuvered around him, then walked blindly to the sink.

Brian looked towards me confused, making me shrug. Ann returned to the room a few minutes later. "Any luck?" Alex asked, as she perched herself on top of the table.

Ann shook her head, "I am the world's unluckiest freak in the world,"

"Hey," Karla pointed an accusing finger at Ann. "Don't be talking like that,"

"Well, it's the truth," Ann replied looking towards Karla blindly. "Just...whatever, I'm going to bed,"

Ann turned towards her room, then ran into the door frame, making Karla and Alex go into a fit of silent giggles. I walked over to Ann and got her into the hallway. Thanks she thought into my head. I frowned at the hint of sadness in her voice.

I walked back into the dining room., to see Karla and Alex hacking at the snakes head, while Lorie looked on in disgust.

"How long does that usually last?" I asked Lorie, motioning towards Ann's room.

"Her mood swings, or the random mutations?" Lorie asked, looking towards me.

"Both I guess," I shrugged.

"Mood swings could be twenty four hours to a couple months," Karla cut Lorie off, before she could talk.

"Random mutations twenty four hours to a week," Alex finished for Karla.

"So she could be blind for another week?" I spat the words out, my anger growing for the people who thought experimenting on humans was okay.

Alex shrugged, "Could be longer,"

"But you said," I started, making the guys trickle into the dining room, before I got cut off.

"She knows what she said," Karla interrupted me, giving Johnny a small smile. "The longest one that we know about lasted a week,"

"And even then the effects could last for the rest of her life," Alex continued, with a sad look.

Silence fell over the room as we thought about what her friends told us. "I wish Ann would tell me the things she tells you two," Lorie crossed her arms, glaring at the girls.

"She doesn't like reliving everything," Karla shrugged.

"It just pops up in conversations," Alex added, as she cleaned off her knife. "We should go to bed," Alex continued, looking towards Karla. "We'll most likely have to take Ann to Travis's,"

Karla nodded then walked into their "bedroom", a.k.a. the kitchen floor, and laid down.

"I've been meaning to ask, " I turned to Lorie.

"The floors comfortable," Lorie shrugged. "They sleep there whenever they're here,"

I nodded my head in understanding, "I'm going to bed,"
