Animosity In The Ranks

Chapter 85

“I’m pretty sure that bubble baths are the magic cure all for anything and everything,” you whispered out loud to no one but the bubbles blocking your vision of most anything.

You smiled and laid your head back on the headrest and closed your eyes while the XM radio played just loud enough to be heard over everything going on outside the hotel. Which apparently was still a horrendous storm as you could hear thunder crashing outside your bedroom’s window. Leaning a bit over the side of the tub without having to move much you peered out the bathroom doors that you had left open and looked out the window as a huge bolt of lightning broke across the sky. You started to count but only got to two before the thunder cracked. Two miles and this time you could literally feel the rumble inside the hotel room and in the tub.

“Shit,” you swore and sloshed back into the tub from the shock of feeling the thunder and spilled water over the edge.

Peering down over the edge at the water you realized that you hadn’t placed the bath mat down from where it sat on a shelf across the bathroom. Scowling at the bath mat and probably at yourself you went back to daydreaming and resting in the soothing suds. Falling asleep in the tub while the hot water worked on your muscles and nerves was definitely on your current agenda. Which is exactly what you allowed yourself to do.

“This is weird,” your muttered as you looked around where you were standing.

Turning around in a slow circle you looked at the tall palm trees and short shrubs dotting the sleepy street you were standing beside on a cracked sidewalk. No one was around, no breezes stirred the bushes, no mothers called out to their children to come inside for lunch. Something about the houses around you nagged at the back of your mind as you searched for some clue as to where you were.

“Oh god. . .” you whispered as you put your hand to your mouth to cover your silent gasp.

You were home.

“But I haven’t been home in years. So many years,” you spoke aloud as you got your bearings and started to turn towards the house you had grown up in.

But your turn towards memory lane so to speak was cut short by the yells of kids and the sounds of stomping sneakers on pavement. Eyes going wide and voice failing you you watched as five young boys raced past you in a group, two by two followed by one.

“Oh god. . .” you heard yourself whisper again as you recognized the five little boys as they breezed by you as if you weren’t even standing there in their way.

As the last one brushed past you you could feel the wind pick up all of a sudden. You could feel it pull through your long hair, which was odd, but somehow you knew it was long. Much longer than you wore it now. Seeing the last kids green t-shirt get ahead of you more and more you kicked up your feet to run after them. You pushed and pushed, stressing your legs as much as you could. But no matter what you did you could never catch up. It felt like you were running through mud. Or paste. Your legs weighed a ton and no matter what you did you couldn’t catch up to the last boy getting even farther from you.

“Zacky wait up! Zacky don’t leave me behind!” you called out as loud as you could, desperation making your voice break.

He couldn’t do that. He couldn’t leave you behind. You needed him. Your voice must have gotten to the little boys because two stopped running and turned around with the giant grins that only little boys could have. It was Zacky in the green t-shirt alright, just as you remembered him. The boy ahead of him stopped momentarily as well and turned to look back at the two of you. Jimmy. No one else had that hair when you were little. Jimmy’s smaller self seemed to have stopped just long enough to turn back and wave at the two of you and give you a smile before turning back around and running off. You stopped after what felt like running a mile as the young Zacky walked back towards you, which now you saw wasn’t all that far. Once he was close to you you watched him reach out his small had, caked with dirt as only boys could. Instinctively you reached out your hand to take his. You almost gasped when you saw that as you reached for his offered helping hand that yours was just as young, if not younger than his. Looking down you saw your own pair of little sneakers, with scrunched down bright colored mismatched socks, followed my scratched and grimy skinny legs. But it was okay, you felt that everything was going to be alright as long as you took his hand and let him help you catch up. Smiling you continued to reach out towards his hand but before you could grab it you felt yourself being ripped away.

“Nooo. . .” you yelled as everything went black, went away.

“I hate you!” someone screamed.

“I hate you!” a voice echoed.

“I hate you!” you gasped as you woke from your dream, causing water once more to overflow the tubs edge.

Blinking your eyes as if to erase everything you had just dreamed of from your mind you assessed your situation. The water was still warm and comfortable so you couldn't have been asleep that long, either that or the hotel had mutant water with super powers to keep it warm for extensive periods of time. Sighing you went back to laying back in the tub, periodically cracking an eye to peer around. You knew it was irrational but with the thunder and lightning going on so hard core outside you felt a little vulnerable sitting in a giant tub of water. Exhaling slowly you tried to get yourself back to relax mode. Which was easier said than done as you heard your windows rattling out in the room now.

“To get out, or not to get out,” you wondered aloud as you peered out at the windows in your room to see if you could see anything that would help you assess the situation outside weather wise.

As soon as you had decided to stay in the tub as you were not nearly prune-y you heard the most god awful sound you had ever heard. It sounded like an animal screaming, mixed with the ripping of sheet metal, mixed with a large firework going off. All inside your hotel room. It was so loud it made your eyes pound, it felt like your eardrums had popped in a not so nice way. But you had only seconds to comprehend the sound that came with the illuminating of your entire hotel room in bright white light because as the hairs stood up painfully on your body there was a bang. And not just any bang, it was so loud that it shook the entire hotel, even knocked stuff off the sink and vanity and you screamed. And continued to scream when all the lights went completely black. Again.

“Kales?” you heard yelled from what could only be on the other side of your rooms door.

“Kales!” another voice shouted followed by the sound of the door to your room slamming against the wall as feet stampeded into your room not even pausing to think that there was no light to see by.

“Kales!” a voice said again, more worry in their voice this time.
