Chapter Seventeen.

The next few days flew by uneventful. The day after Christmas was full of phone calls from the girls and guys, checking on Madi. The children’s hospital called me back and told me that all Madelyn’s tests came back negative, and that she just had a virus. I was so relieved to hear those words that I picked my baby up and cried as I held her, which is how Brian found me when he came over that day and totally freaked out thinking I got bad news. I told him that everything was okay and he scooped the baby out of my arms and laughed and kissed all over her face. I instantly melted. I called everyone to tell them the good news and we decided to have a huge dinner to celebrate. Steaks, shrimp, salads, veggies, and Val made a huge red velvet cake. Leana and Jimmy brought the wine and beer and we had a fantastic night with our friends.

Brian has been so amazing, playing with Cameron and helping out with Madi. I don’t ask him to do any of these things he just does them. One night Madi was really fussy and wanted me to hold her to get her to sleep, and Cam had asked for a snack. I was in the kitchen trying to peel an orange with Madi in my arms, when Brian stepped in and grabbed the crying baby out of my arms. When I protested he said “relax babe, I want to help you.” and carried my daughter into the living room, where he successfully rocked her to sleep. We’ve been staying between my place and his lately, I haven’t slept alone since the night Madelyn had to go to the hospital. I secretly thought that he didn’t want to leave because he was afraid something might happen again, but maybe he just really likes me.

Today was the day of our girls’ shopping trip, while Cameron had a day with the guys. Val, Lacey, Leana, Gena, Madi, and I all piled into Val’s Escalade, me in the front seat with Val, because they insisted that I was off baby duty for the afternoon. “Come on B,” Leana argued, “there are plenty of us here that you can relax and just be a girl for the day. We’ll take care of her.” “Come sit up front with me,” Val said, “you can be the DJ.” “Okay fine,” I sighed, “but if she becomes too much I’m taking over.” I said, pointing my finger at the girls. “Oh please” Gena said, rolling her eyes, “that baby is an angel.” I smiled at my four best friends and we were off to the mall, singing and goofing off the entire way. Once we reached the mall we decided to grab a quick bite to eat before we started shopping. We were all standing in line at the Chinese place when we heard a “Hey Val!” and we all turned around. “Oh, hey Chell.” Val said, going to hug the woman. “Who’s this?” she asked, gesturing toward me. “Oh, I’m sorry. Michelle this is Brook, Brian’s girlfriend. Brook, this is Michelle, my sister.” “Hello” I smiled and waved, watching her face turn sour. “Brian’s girlfriend? Really Valary? Is this her baby too?” she asked, looking into the stroller. Her eyes widened when she looked at my brown haired, brown eyed little girl. “Is she Brian’s?” Michelle asked. “No, she’s not. Not that it‘s any of your business.” I replied icily. “Wow, you have a tiny baby and you’re dating someone else? That’s really classy of you.” Michelle said, placing a hand on her hip. “Really Michelle? You need to get the fuck out of here. You have no idea who this girl is and what she’s been through, so I suggest you back up and leave her alone.” Leana said, standing in between Michelle and Madelyn’s stroller. “Whatever. I’m out of here. Enjoy my sloppy seconds sweetheart, it’s only a matter of time before he dumps you too.” Michelle said as she turned around and walked away, leaving me fuming. How dare she say anything about me or my child? Who in the hell does she think she is? She would be married to an amazing guy if she would have kept her legs shut. “Brook I am so sorry” Val said, placing her hand on my arm. “She’s been a total bitch since her divorce with Brian, which makes no sense because she’s the idiot that cheated on him” Gena spoke up, “Don’t listen to anything she says, Brian isn’t going anywhere, and she has no right to judge you for anything you’ve done when she broke the number one rule of a marriage.” “It’s okay guys, I’m fine. Let’s eat and go shopping so we can look hot on New Year’s” I said with a smile. I wasn’t about to let some jealous bitch ruin my afternoon with the girls.

We finished our lunch and headed straight to the dress shop, where we went crazy trying to find dresses that looked great on all of us. After trying on what seemed like a million dresses, I found a gorgeous strapless purple dress, short with a sweetheart neckline and covered in sequins. “Oh, Brian is going to love that!” Leana said, coming out of the dressing room in a short black one-sleeved dress. Gena picked out a red dress that was short, and cut similar to mine. Val chose a dark teal v-neck dress that had lace on the top and a beaded waist. And Lacey chose a dark gray dress that had a deep v-neck and lace sleeves. “Oh my god, we’re going to look so hot at that club” Gena said excitedly, “the guys aren’t going to be able to keep their hands off of us!” Lacey chirped. “Dresses, check. Shoes and accessories next?” I asked the girls with a smile. “Let’s go! I love shopping!” Val said enthusiastically. We all paid for our dresses and headed to the shoe store. We spent at least two hours in the shoe store, trying to figure out which pair of heels were best for our dresses “Now remember,” Lacey said, “we have to be able to dance in our shoes, we can’t walk around the club dancing barefoot.” We finally made our selections. I got a pair of strappy silver stilettos, and Leana picked a pair of nude colored peep-toe heels. Val grabbed a pair of black heels that were covered in spikes. Lacey chose a pair of simple pink stilettos, and Gena picked up a pair of strappy black wedge boots. We all decided that we didn’t really want accessories, that we had plenty at home, so we decided to pay for our shoes and make a special trip to Victoria’ Secret. We all went our separate ways in the store, and I grabbed a new pair of sweats, a ton of lace and silk panties, a new bra, and a really gorgeous black lace baby doll nightgown. I picked up another bottle of perfume and some new body wash and met the girls at the registers. “Ooh, sexy” Leana commented with a grin. I rolled my eyes “Oh yeah, it’s super hot.” I joked. We all checked out and decided to call it a day. “That was definitely a successful trip” Gena commented on the ride home “I can’t wait to see everyone all dressed up Monday night” “I can’t wait either, we’re all going to look so great. Good thing the guys got a limo” Leana grinned, “I don’t think any of us should be allowed to drive that night.” “You’re probably right, we’re all going to have massive amounts of alcohol, and I plan on completely enjoying myself” I smiled. “Hey B when is your mom flying in?” Lacey asked from the very back of Val’s car. “Tonight, oh shit, Bri and I have to go pick her up.” I said, completely forgetting. I pulled out my phone and dialed Brian’s number. “Hey baby girl, you having fun?” he asked when he answered “Yeah babe, we’re all done now though, we’re headed home. I just remembered that we have to go pick up my mom tonight, her plane lands at 8” I said, looking at the clock anxiously. “It’s ok babe, we have time. It’s only 5:30” Brian chuckled. “Once you get home we’ll go grab something to eat and head to the airport.” he suggested. “Okay Bri, thanks. I’ll see you in a few.” We disconnected and I looked at Val, “Mind dropping me off first?” I asked, “Not at all, I was planning on doing that anyway since you’re closest to the mall” she smiled.

Once we got to my house Brian came out to help me get Madi and all of our things, including her stroller, out of Val’s car. “I see Victoria’s Secret bags,” Brian said, reaching for the pink striped bags. “Don’t even think about it Haner,” I said, pulling the bags out of his reach, “you can’t see what’s inside. Don’t be trying to check out my dress either” I joked. “Aw man, you mean I have to wait until Monday to see it?” he pouted. “Yep, just like everyone else.” I said, kissing his cheek. I said goodbye to the girls and we headed inside. I changed and fed Madelyn, helped Cameron pull his shoes on, and we were back in the car, headed toward dinner and the airport. I couldn’t wait to see my mom.
