The Sun Makes Shadows

Warning

Nyaa’s POV

I talked with Val and Matt for a little while longer until Ms. Karen announced parent day was over. Val smiled sadly at me before they both waved goodbye. Once all the parents cleared out I went upstairs to my room with a smile on my face.

I had just met M. Shadows and they talked to me the longest; there might be a slight chance that I’ll be adopted. Smiling to myself I collapsed onto my bed and my 10 year old roommate ignored me, she was playing with dolls or something.

My eye’s traveled to the one picture I had hung up besides my head. My grandma smiled widely back at me, her cheeks causing her glasses to be pushed up slightly and a white sweater draped over her shoulders.

“We might get out of here Gram,” I spoke it softly before drifting off into a light nap.

I found myself at my old home back in Arizona, only this time it was nicer, beautiful in fact. The once dead grass now lay alive and green under my bare feet. I reached down to touch it, make sure it was real. The sun touched my back lightly warming me. I know I was dreaming but I knew this was a different kind of dream, it was special. I turned once I heard her voice behind me.

“You’ve grown to be such a pretty Mashaxay,” [AN: Mashaxay means girl in Native American] I smiled as my grandmother walked towards me; I longed to hug her, hold her, anything but I knew I couldn’t. When spirits visit your dreams you cannot touch them or you’ll never wake up. It’s just the way we believed.

“I’ve missed you Gram,” I felt my eyes start to water.

“Shh now don’t cry, I’ve come to tell you something important.”

My joy turned to curiosity as I raised one eyebrow. “What?” I grew alarmed.

“Don’t worry its good news,” my Gram reassured me. “The people you met today,” I nodded knowing she meant Val and Matt. “They will adopt you,” I smiled widely at the news.

“Really, I’ll get a home?” I asked excitedly. She smiled at me happy at first then it turned grim, the sun was soon hidden behind clouds and I looked up at it fearfully as knots formed in my stomach. “Gram what’s wrong?” I turned back to her.

“Valery is sincere, she will love you but,” she trailed off shaking her head.

“Gram, what is it?” she looked down unsure of herself which made me fearful. “Inaquo?” I said grandma in our language since she wasn’t listening to me.

“Matt,” she sighed starting. “He doesn’t want a child, he won’t love you. It’s best to just stay out of his way and you’ll be fine.” My heart sank as I heard the warning. I didn’t notice the scenery disappear as I slowly started to hear things around me.

“Nyaa,” I opened my eyes to meet that of the 10 year old. Her blue eyes stared curiously at me as I started to sit up.

“It’s time for dinner,” I nodded and watched her skip out of the room. Looking up at my grandma I gave a sad smile before joining the others in the dining hall.

I put my ear phones in as I sat at the large dining table. Aimlessly eating whatever was in front of me my thoughts traveled to my grandma’s warning.

Matt, M. Shadows didn’t want children, he didn’t want me.
