Hunting
I awoke to someone shaking me and I slowly opened my eyes and looked up at my sister.
“What is it?” I asked groggily.
“It’s almost dawn. I have a small breakfast down in the kitchen for you and the other hunters.”
“Thanks sis. Are they awake?” I asked sitting up and throwing my legs over the side of the bed.
“Yeah and they’re already in the kitchen eating the food I put out.”
“I’ll be down in a minute. I just need to get my gear on.” I said and she sat down on the bed next to me.
“Sis…do you think this epidemic will be over soon?”
“I hope so Felicity. I really do hope so.” I said nodding.
“Me too. Well I’m going to tell the guys that you’ll be down in a few minutes.”
“Is there something wrong sis?” I asked grabbing her hand.
“I’m just thinking about our parents. I really miss them.”
“I know sis and I do too.” I said standing to my feet and pulling her in for a hug. She held onto me like she would mom when she had a problem. I guess you could say I’m more of her mother now than a sister really. She let go of me and left the room closing the door behind her. I went over to my closet and grabbed some camouflage pants and shirt and quickly changed. I didn’t want to take any kind of a bath right now since when we get home, I’ll have blood all over me from the gutting and skinning.
I grabbed the gun belt from the table beside my bed and strapped it on before going over to the mirror and putting my hair up plus a camo bandana. I slipped on my boots and left my room and went into the kitchen where John, Mike, Dante, and Jacob were sitting there still eating and conversing a little. I grabbed the covered plate from the counter and went over to the table where they continued to talk. I quickly ate my food and took their plates and placed them into the sink.
“Let’s get geared up and head out.” I said grabbing water bottles from the fridge and throwing them to each person before I led them out of the kitchen and to a door that led down to the basement. I handed each of them a belt with 6 hunting knives on them and medium pouches to put extra bullets in and I took off some of the Winchester Rifles from the wall and handed them to each person. I made sure to grab some walkie talkies from the drawer and giving it to them plus getting one for my sister. We left the basement and I grabbed my keys from the mantle and handed my sister the walkie talkie.
“We’re on channel 4. Radio me if you need anything.” I said and hugged her tightly. I always did that before going out to hunt. Hell I never know what might happen.
“See you when you get back.” I nodded and left out the back of the house and shutting off the mines.

We had a pretty good hunting day. I bagged some rabbits and a deer, Dante shot 2 deer and so did the others. We drug our kills back to the house and Jacob helped me string up each animal by the feet.
“I’ll show Dante and Mike how to gut and skin and you take John.” I said and he nodded. I explained to Mike and Dante the reasoning on stringing the creatures up by the feet where the head was hanging towards the ground and then I picked up one of my sharp hunting knives and started getting away the skin and explaining how to do it. When I got all the skin off without any blood, it was now time to show them how to gut.
“Now that you know the proper way to skin the animal, it’s time to gut it. Take you a good sharp, clean hunting knife and start at the groin of the animal and split it to the start of the sternum then from the front of the shoulders down to where you stopped at under the sternum. Yes there will be a lot of blood but it’s nothing to worry about.” I explained while cutting the animal. Blood rushed out of the animal and down to the ground like a flow of water that had been dumped.
“Next, you take the skin and fold it back and attach these clips to them so it will be held back so it won’t be in the way. You can either cut all the intestines out of the body or just pull them out like I do.” I said shoving my hand into the cavity of the dead animal and pulling out the intestines and throwing them into a bucket. I finished by showing them how to cut the meat from the bone being very careful not to get any bone shards in the meat. I placed each huge slab of meat onto the wooden table until all the juicy meat inside was gone.
“You don’t want to leave a carcass like this just laying around so you burn it. Now since you’ve seen what I’ve done, you all can do your deer while I finish up with my other kills.” I said unhooking the deer and letting its body thud to the ground. I grabbed it by the feet and pulled it away from the house and going back over and gutting and skinning the rabbits and squirrels I had bagged also. I kept a close eye on the guys as they cleaned their animals of all the meat and skin and for first timers, they really did well. Dante was the only one who asked me simple question which I answered and he drug his deer carcass over to the pile. I took my meat into the house and straight to the kitchen where Felicity was waiting with a pot of already boiling water.
I always had her do that to the meat. It always made it taste better. After dropping off the meat, I went into the garage and picked up a gas can and went back out to where the pile of carcasses. I poured enough gas to make a really good fire and then threw a lit match and it erupted into flames. Sammy brought out some drinks for us as we sat around the fire until it died down enough to leave it. I could absolutely say this was a really good day. I don’t have a lot of good days since all this has happened but today was actually enjoyable.
