“Post is here!”

Dylan all-but screamed through the house as the door between the porch and the house was slammed shut with such ferocity and excitement that all the children in the Jones household looked up in surprise. Skipping in through to the kitchen with a wide grin on his face, Dylan began to hand out the post to appropriate family members. He was obviously expecting something.

Alfie shook her head and took another bite from her toast. The sweetness of the cooked bread felt almost greasy around her mouth and the crumbs scratched fiercely across her flesh as she scraped the corner of her sleeve across in order to get rid of the excess butter smeared around her lips. the buzz in the room slowly died down as Dylan sat down next to her, throwing a letter in her general direction.

A disappointed expression overcame his face.

“What’s up with you?” Alfie asked over her mug of tea.

“Nothing.” Dylan bitterly shoved away from the table and stormed away from the kitchen empty-handed.

Shrugging it off with a shake of her head Mrs Emily Jones sat down in the recently vacated seat. Her elegant fingers reached out and prodded at the letter thrown into Alfie’s line of view. Her brow furrowed for a moment or two before she leaned back with her mug of coffee and looked expectantly towards her one and only daughter.

It was then that Alfie took in the package. A big white A4 sized envelope with American stamps and postal markings was staring back at her with black, handwritten words stating her name and address clearly. Alfie frowned for a moment. It wasn’t often that she received letters from her family in America, or any of her family for that matter.

Cautiously, she flipped it over and began to peel away the tongue.

“What is it, Alfie?” Caleb was leaning on the back of her chair, his upper half bending over her shoulder for a better view. He smelt like cows.

Crinkling her nose, Alfie exclaimed; “Ugh, get out me face a sec, you reek.”

There was a laugh throughout the room as Caleb stuck his tongue out. Bumping his pelvis up against the back of the chair cheekily to make the poor girl bounce around, Caleb grinned widely. Alfie shoved back hard and almost managed to throw the chair backwards onto the slate flooring. A groan emitted from her older sibling as he clutched his damaged manhood.

“That’ll teach you,” Gareth muttered, pulling up a chair and stretching his legs across his sister.

Rolling her eyes, Alfie finally managed to open up her envelope and pull out the wad of paper inside. The logo for an American band she knew vaguely of was brandished on the front cover of the booklet as a fabric necklace, tag and handwritten letter fell to the slate flooring with an excited thump. Alfie frowned. Picking up the dropped items, Emily examined them carefully before handing over the handwritten letter – still toying with the pass-holder.
Dear Alfie,” the letter began.

I know last time we spoke you weren’t in a very good situation back in Wales. So, as your favourite uncle and godfather I took things into my own hands. Enclosed are the details of your new job with a band I currently manage out here in California. They will be going on tour next week so I have sent your airline tickets and staff-pass ready for you to start as soon as you get here. All my love, Uncle John.
“Uncle John has just given me a job for the year.” Alfie looked at her mother with shocked blue orbs opened wide.

Emily held her hands up. “Don’t look at me. You better go get packed. It says your flight’s tomorrow.”

“Flight to where?”

Her father was in the kitchen, tugging off his wellingtons with a grunt. His shaggy brown hair was balding on the top – a shiny patch of skin glowing in the illuminated kitchen warmed by the burning Aga in the corner. As he grumbled around the kitchen, washing his hands and the like, Alfie flicked airily through the booklet to distract herself away from the conversation and possible argument that would soon ensue.

“John has given Alfie a job out in America.” Emily smiled at her husband.

David almost choked on his glass of water as he looked across at Alfie, his pride and joy; nay, his life. He adored his daughter more than anything he has ever adored more in his born days. That wasn’t to say that he didn’t love all his children the same, but Alfie being his only daughter he would always have a little soft-spot for her.

“She’s not going to America on her own!” he announced.

Emily frowned. “Why ever not, David? She’s been through a tough time. She deserves a break.”

Alfie looked at her father with those doe-like blue orbs and held his gaze for a long moment. When a smile slowly began to relent across her lips, David couldn’t hold back his emotions and one of his brown orbs began to tear up. A screech of the chair being shoved across the floor was heard and he soon felt the small arms of his daughter wrapping around his middle.

“Please, Daddy,” she whispered, resting her head against his chest.

Touching her hair softly, David breathed in her sweet scent. “Okay,” he finally muttered. “But I’m going to make some arrangements with John first.”

Nodding her head slowly, Alfie grinned widely and planted a huge kiss on her father’s bulging red cheek. He shook his head and wiped away the tear that had threatened to fall. Emily grabbed hold of her daughter’s hand and began to tug her towards the stairs leading up to Alfie’s bedroom in order to start packing.

Once the two women were out of earshot, David turned the booklet around to look at it more scathingly. He had scarcely spoken to his brother recently, but he knew that he’d gotten himself into the music industry. frowning carefully down at the winged skull on the front cover, his dirt-ingrained fingers traced the words carefully.

“Avenged Sevenfold,” he muttered.
