As soon as Maddie got home, she picked up her phone and dialed Val’s number. She answered after 3 rings.
“Val?”
“Yep, speaking- who’s this?” she replied,
“It’s Maddie, didn’t you see caller ID?”
“Sorry my brain is all over the place at the moment! What can I do you for?”
“I’ve had a strange couple of days, can we meet up and talk?”
“Of course, I need to catch up with you too. Come round to mine now!”
“Alright I’ll be there in 5” Maddie said, excited to see what Val thought about the whole situation. She grabbed her keys and locked up, heading outside. Val’s wasn’t far from hers so she decided to walk. She’d left her car at Zack’s anyway so she really didn’t have much of a choice; thankfully the weather was nice- not too hot but bright and sunny. Unfortunately there was nothing to distract her from all the thoughts swirling around in her head, mainly about Matt. Now she wasn’t with Zacky there was nothing to distract her from her aching heart, she wasn’t even angry at him, although she felt she should’ve been, if he came and wanted her again she’d take him back without a second thought. It wasn’t long before she arrived at Val’s, she went up to the door and rung the bell, she answered it immediately, pulling Maddie into a hug before she even knew what was happening.
“Oof!” Maddie said as Val crushed her in her arms, “Someone’s happy!”
“You have no idea! But I’ll tell you about that later, I want to hear about you first. Come in and sit down.” She beckoned her in and they both took a seat in the living room. “So. What’s going on, what do you want to talk about?”
“You know I was going out with that guy?” Val nodded, “well the other day he just came round and dumped me. Straight up, didn’t say anything. Didn’t even look at me, just told me it was over and left.”
“What?! I thought it was going well! What a dick!”
“I know, I just don’t understand why, it hurts. We weren’t even together that long but I got so invested. I feel like an idiot now but I don’t know how to get over it.” She could feel herself getting upset, and she was trying really hard not to cry. Val could see this, and tried to make her feel better.
“Look, try and stop thinking about it, it’ll make you feel worse, what did you do after? You weren’t by yourself were you?” Val asked.
“I called you but you didn’t pick up, there was only one other place I knew to go. It was one of his friends I met a few weeks ago. He was so nice; he comforted me when I was just a crying mess. Then he kissed me, which was a bit weird.”
“Oh my God! What did you do?”
“I pulled away and went to bed, I had no idea what was going on! Then this morning I just pretended it hadn’t happened and he was even nicer to me. He took me to the beach; it was all going well until he was speaking to another guy and then left, acting all strange but didn’t explain anything. That was when I called you.”
“Wow, so what do you think now? What went on?”
“I have no idea! I’ve thought about it too much and have confused myself.” Maddie chuckled humorlessly. “Anyway, enough about me, what’s got you so excited?”
“Well as you are aware I’m pregnant, I got in touch with the father and we’re back together, isn’t that great!” Val said joyfully.
“Oh my God that’s brilliant! I said you wouldn’t regret it!”
“Ha ha I know, he’s being so good, trying to make up for not being there and…”
The doorbell interrupted her suddenly. “Give me a sec, I’ll just get that.”
Val got up to open the door. Maddie couldn’t see her but she heard another voice, a female one, one that sounded oddly familiar. She couldn’t think who it was, Val’s voice was getting louder as her and her guest came inside.
“I want you to meet one of my friends.” She said.
“Ok, are they in here?” the voice asked as they reached the living room. As they turned the corner, following Val was someone Maddie knew and really didn’t want to see. It was Michelle. As Michelle saw who she was her face fell in first confusion, then anger.
”What the hell is she doing here!?” Michelle asked in horrified anger.
“This is my friend Maddie, how do you know her?” Val replied looking questioning.
“How do you know her?” Michelle retorted.
“We met shopping a few weeks ago, we just got to know each other.” Maddie interjected. “How do you two know each other?”
“We’re sisters dumbass!” Michelle said.
“Michelle! Why did you say that?” Val gasped.
“You mean… do you know who this is?” Michelle asked. “You don’t?!” she exclaimed when she saw Val’s blank face. “This is the bitch who was with Matt!”
“What…” Val said quietly.
“How do you know who Matt is?” Maddie asked.
“I’m his fucking wife!” Val shouted.
“Wife?!”
“Oh my God. That’s who your boyfriend was.” Val said, shocked.
“So… Matt’s your baby’s dad? That’s why he dumped me? He was married?! What the actual fuck is going on.”
There was silence for a few seconds until they all heard a car pull into the drive. They all knew who it was, and there was more than one person in the room was ready to punch him in the face.
