A New Beginning

Prologue

Brian and I were always best friends. We had known each other since we were in preschool. We supported each other through everything, no matter what the situation was... Most of the time. Everything had been perfectly fine until senior year. I had decided to go off to a college in Omaha, Nebraska... Brian didn't approve. We had gotten in a huge fight over the entire thing.

"Hey, best friend." I said to him as he opened the door to his decent sized Hunington Beach house to let me in. His parents were off in L.A. for their anniversary, as usual.

"Oh hey," He said smiling at me. God, I loved his smile. It made my heart melt. "There was something you wanted to talk to me about?"

"Yeah... I finally figured out where I'm going to college. I'm going to one in Omaha, Nebraska where my uncle lives. I'll be far away from you and the rest of the guys, but I'll be sure to come visit lots." I couldn't wait for his reaction.

Brian's smile faltered. "You're... You're gonna leave?" He whispered. He looked about ready to cry. "Why... Why would... Why would you choose to go so far away? Why would you leave me?" Not the reaction I had been looking for.

"Brian... I'm leaving in August... We still have time to hang out and such. You're my best friend... It kills me to go, but I need to. My whole life is ahead of me."

"Emma... You can't go... I was about... I was about to..." He stuttered to keep talking, but I interrupted.

"About to what?"

"After all these years... I was about to confess. I was about to confess my love for you... But now it's too late, just go. Leave." His face went cold. I had never seen him like this.

"Brian... What? Why are you just doing this now?" Tears were welling in my eyes. "Why couldn't you have done this a long time ago?" I took a step torward him, but he pushed me away from himself."

"Leave. Now. Goodbye." He turned and walked away. He was overreacting... And I didn't understand why. I let out a quiet sob, and walked out the front door to leave. I already knew that Brian Haner Jr would never speak to me again...
