Nightmare

XIII

A father is an essential thing for a girl. He is the one guy she can actually trust. He was once a young man himself so he knows what to protect his daughter from. All the antics a boy might try. He is the shoulder she can cry on and the one she can lean on. No matter what he will try to do what is best for her. It really sucks that some children don’t have fathers (or good mothers either). Their fathers leave them, neglect them, abuse them, die, get sent to jail, or some other cruel twist of fate. Fathers are not people that should ever do wrong by their family.

Some people get the good guys. The “First Class” fathers in the world. Those are the types of fathers that are irreplaceable. My father is irreplaceable to me. I lost him but he is still my only father. So how does Brian exactly expect me to react to this idea of adoption? He can’t be my “father”. Besides, I have known these people for such a short amount of time. Way too soon and way too much to handle.

Riley thought I should at least talk to them about this instead of what I had done earlier. Which was pretty much stare at them and make an excuse to leave. It’s kind of hard to respond to what they offered. What was I supposed to do, jump for joy and scream yes? No, I don’t think so. Come on, I am a freaking orphan who’s also a nut job. Adoption does not seem like a very wise decision at the moment. Considering I’m also in a mental hospital. Who in their right mind would want to take in a person like me as their kid? Though that was not the biggest thing on my mind right now. My father is dead. He was and always will be my only father. Flesh and blood is a deeper attachment than some signed pieces of paper.

Riley sat down at the foot of the bed, “Come on kid, at least talk to them about all of this.”
I glared lightly at him, “You said you had a good feeling about today. Good day indeed Riley…”
He frowned at the sarcasm. “I did have a good feeling. I had a feeling that something amazing and wonderful would happen to you. I was right! Maive, this is your chance for a family again! You can’t allow yourself to be cooped up in this place forever. You deserve better than that. Those people deserve better than some lame excuse and a retreat from you! They care for you and are offering you a home. Now do the right thing and discuss this with them. At least sign the papers and try it out for a few days or weeks, give them a chance. They went to these lengths just for you. Now get your butt off of the bed and find them. Besides, you know that if you don’t give them a chance I will pester you about this till you do.”

The look in his eyes showed he was telling the truth. There was no way to get out of this. Either I talked to them and signed the papers now or Riley will force me to do it later. Might as well get this over with. Reluctantly I got up and walked to the room I knew they were still in. My feet stopped moving as I reached the door. Through the window I could see what I was about to face. Brian sat in a chair, his elbows on his knees, and head in his hands. Michelle’s face held a frown alien to her usual happy features. The other guys were not in the room at the moment. Which was a good thing considering how very personal this matter was. I felt bad as I looked at the couple on the other side of the door.

Raising my arm, I knocked lightly on the door, feeling like it was necessary. Both of their heads shot up. They looked at me through the door, a hopeful glint in their eyes.
“Go in”, I about jumped as Riley spoke into my ear. Groaning lightly, I slowly opened the door and shut it behind me. My eyes stayed glued to the floor. I didn't dare look up, even if it seemed rude of me.

“I’m sorry for my behavior earlier. I should not have walked away from such a pressing matter. It was just rather hard to take in. I hope you will forgive me.”
“Oh honey there is nothing to forgive. We should be the ones apologizing. It was unfair for us to spring something like this on you. We could not have honestly expected you to say yes on the spot”, Michelle rushed forward to stand in front of me.
“I still should be apologizing for abruptly leaving. I am sorry for that. It was just quite a shock. I just didn't know how to respond…” Footsteps echoed throughout my head with my thoughts, bouncing around my skull. A pair of shiny, black shoes stopped just in my line of vision.
“Maive, look at me…”

My head lifted till my eyes met his cautiously. His eyebrows scrunched together, creasing a few lines in between them. A soft look floated about in his eyes. Sighing, his body relaxed, shoulders slumping. “We don’t want to put pressure on you about this. This is something we want you to think thoroughly about. Just keep in mind that we do want to follow through with this. We want you to be a part of our family, well officially, because in the time we have been here you have become a part of the family. All the guys adore you, Michelle adores you… and so do I. Even if you decide against this, we will still always be here for you when you need us and if you are ever ready.”

My eyes stung as I began to feel tears slowly building. Blinking them away, I looked up at them to see if there was any reason to doubt them. Couldn't see anything except complete and total honesty.

“Let’s give this shot.”
