Clairvoyant Disease

Matthew's Secret

I awoke the next day to sun blazing in my eyes.
I groaned softly and rolled over. The clock on the bed stand read "10:30 am" Its the latest I have ever slept in my entire life.
I wanted to continue sleeping since I had no specific time to be up. But after closing and opening my eyes a million times, I gave up and decided to face the world. I walked to the bathroom and turned on the water from the sink and sighed at my reflection. I would be happy when Brian took me shopping today. I liked his shirt and all, but I wanted some clothes for myself.
I sighed again and washed my face. Drying it on the towel by the sink. I tied my long red hair into a messy side braid. Once I was content with my appearance, or as content as I could be right now, I walked out of the bathroom and into my room. I took one of the pills from my pocket and laid back down on my bed.
My eyes drifted as they became heavy. I wanted to go back to sleep, but not like this. I jolted myself awake and climbed out of bed.
I had to face the day. I wasn't in the hospital anymore, I needed to break this routine. I wiped a few small tears from eyes and walked out of the hallway and down the stairs. I walked into the kitchen to see a shirtless Matthew sitting at the table. He was haunched over a bowl of cereal. Munching loudly. I walked over to him and smiled as I sat down.
"Morning." he says through a mouth full. I giggled as a thin line of milk fell down his chin.
"Morning." I say. "I think I might have some of that." I say as a pull a bowl towards me and reach out for the cereal.
"No!" he says suddenly. I jumped a bit and looked into his worried eyes.
"Im sorry..." I say quietly as I extend my hand back.
"Let me..." he says. He reaches out for the bowl. I pushed it towards him and he poured the cereal and the milk for me and pushed the bowl back and handed me a spoon.
"Thank you." I say.
He did not respond. Instead he neatly put all of the items back the way he hand them, and even turned them and lined them up a few more times before returning to his bowl and finishing his cereal.
Much like Dillion did. My eyes widened as I looked at Matt. But I brushed my thoughts away. Everyone is a little OCD, even I was. So maybe he just liked things neat.
"So..." he says quietly.
"So...." I return the awkwardness.
"I heard you crying last night." he says.
"O-oh." I stutter as I look down into my cereal bowl.
"Brian didn't kidnap you, did he?" he chuckled and so did I.
"No." I say "I wish it were that easy to explain." I sigh.
"Come with me." He says. "I have something that might make you feel better."
I smiled and followed him the upstairs and into his bedroom. I gasped at how neat and organized it was. It reminded me much of Dillion's room back at the hospital.
"Am I the only guy you have meet that keeps a tidy room?" he winked over to me and laughed.
I didn't answer but laughed along with him. I couldn't risk a meltdown with a stranger. Theres no telling what he would do. Especially if he was anything like Dillion.
He walked into his closet and muttered a few things to himself under his breath.
I waited by his bed and looked around the room. I spied a picture by his bed stand. A beautiful blonde woman was smiling up at him as he was looking down to her with a huge grin on his face. I couldn't help but to smile at the picture. He seemed so happy.
"Here..." he says handing me a black tank top and a pair of slacks and some flip flops. Not really my style, but I was grateful. "I know Brian is supposed to take you shopping today, but Im sure you don't wanna wear that out." he says pointing to my clothes.
"Thank you." I say through a smile.
"No problem..." he says touching his cheek.
"Shadows, what are you doing?"
We both jumped at the sound and turned to see Brian standing in the doorway. His arms folded across his chest.
"I was just giving her some clothes." Matt says stepping away from me.
"Mhm..." he says sternly. "And did you tell Amaryllis where the clothes came from?"
"Look it doesn't matter." I lied. I didn't want to be wearing an ex girlfriends clothes but I was still grateful for Matt's generosity since up until now he showed signs of not really wanting me here. "Thank you again Matt for the clothes." I say. I smile and walk by Brian and into the hall.
"Don't encourage him." Brian says as he slips an arm around my waist.
"Should I be worried?" I say as I wink up at him.
"He's harmless. But he did just get out of a relationship, so just be careful." he says again kissing the top of my head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a full day of shopping, Brian had brought me to a coffee shop on the outskirts of town to chill out for a bit before returning home.
"Wanna be my girlfiend?" Brian asks abruptly breaking the silence between us.
"Im sorry?" I say almost spitting my macchiato all over him.
"Simple yes or no question here dear." he says matter of factly. He stirred more sugar into his coffee and smiling up at me.
"No offense but we barely know each other." I say.
"No offense but we almost had sex." he says quietly.
My cheeks flush red as I look down to my hands. "Strangers have sex all the time."
"Clearly not you though." he says. "Look, we can take things slow , I am alright with that. I just like you, a lot." he laughs.
"Brian...." I say quietly.
"I get your damaged. I can work around that." he says shaking his hands to and fro.
"Brian...I spent the last 14 years in a mental hospital. Im a depressed, medicated looney. Your a famous guitarist. To you really want to deal with me?" I sigh.
"I wouldn't have bought you a car full of things to move into my home if didn't want to deal with you."
I look away from him and try to gather my thoughts.
What exactly happened to you?” he asks taking a sip of his coffee.
“I don’t wanna…”
“If you want me to assume I cant deal with you, I need to know what Im getting into before I can positively reassure you I can handle it. So tell me…what happened to you.”
I swallowed hard as I looked around, anything to keep me from looking into his eyes.
“Amaryllis.” Brian sighs taking my hands.“Im not going anywhere anytime soon.” He says through a small chuckle.
I took in a deep breath and closed my eyes as I remembered the terrible night that landed me in the hospital.
*Flashback*
I was 6 years old. My mother was at work as always, and my father was at home with me. Drunk, and almost passed out on the couch.
I was upstairs playing with my toys as a normal six year old little girl would do. I heard a car door slam outside and dropped my toys instantly as I ran to the window.
“MOMMY!” I shout as I tap wildly on the window and wave to her.
She smiled up at my window and waved before disappearing up the steps that led to the front door. I rushed down the hall to the top of the stairs when I heard my parents fighting. They always fought when he was drinking. I listened for a moment as the shouting grew worse. I ran back down the hall and into the closet by the bathroom. It held all my mom’s linens and towels. I squeezed myself into the back of the closet and plugged my fingers into my ears. I felt heavy footstep walk past the door of the closet. I unplugged my ears thinking maybe it was over. I stayed where I was for a few moments and the heavy footsteps returned and walked past again. Obviously my father wasn’t finished yelling at her. I waited for the shouting to continue, but it was quiet. Then I heard it. The gunshot. And then another. I began to shake terribly. I waited for the footsteps to return to the stairs. But they didn’t. I reached up for the closet door knob and slowly opened the door. I peeked out down the hall and walked to the top of the stairs. I ran down the stairs to see my mother lying in a pool of blood. I leaned down next to her. “Mommy…” I whisper. “Mommy…” I say again poking at her side. She didn’t move and I knew she was dead.
I looked around for my father, and I saw him laying down in the kitchen, he too was lying down in pool of blood.
“It took two days before someone reported the gunshots that were heard and for someone to find me. I was snuggled under my mother. Covered in her blood. I hadn’t eaten or bathed. They sent me to the hospital and I was there until I turned 18. No family claimed me. I attempted suicide several times. The year I turned 17 I began to corporate so I could release myself at 18. Now here we are.” I say finishing my story.
Brian was quiet. He didn’t respond. Instead he cleared his throat. “Im so sorry.” He says squeezing my hands.
I sighed heavily. “As I said…”
“As I said, I can handle it.” He whispers. “Matt’s girlfriend Valary, she took her life not long ago. Hes been in a rut ever since. He likes to pretend hes over it, but hes not.”
You don’t even know the half of it. I thought to myself.
“I will be your girlfriend.” I say with a smile.
He leans over the table and kisses me lightly. “Its time for some happiness.” He says poking my nose.
After we finished our coffee we returned back to his house. He helped me with my bagillion bags. We sat in my room for sometime before he broke the silence. I was folding clothes and putting them in the drawers.“Here is the password for the wifi for your new laptop.”He says handing me a small piece of paper. “I have to run and take care of some things, will you be alrighthere?”
“Yes of course.” I say sheepishly.
“Okay. I wont be long. I promise.” He says and kisses me cheek before disappearing into the hall.
I returned to unpacking the mountain of clothes that Brian had bought for me when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
“Brian, I said I would be alright…” I turn to see Matthew standing in the doorway.
“Need any help?”
