Something's Getting In The Way.

17.

Nerves.

That’s all I was two weeks later, a bundle of nerves. I was nervous for many reasons; one of them being that today was the day I was going to get to see the baby, as you can see, I was nervous as fuck.

“Evan! Are you ready?” Jimmy asked, yelling up the stairs, I was stuck in the bedroom, grabbing a jacket.

“Yeah! I’m coming!” I yelled. I went down the stairs carefully; I didn’t feel like tripping and falling flat on my face. When I got to the bottom, Jimmy was standing there, his arms crossed. I shook my head and rolled my eyes.

“God, women they take forever.” He muttered under his breath breath. I scrunched up my face and slapped him on the shoulder; the next expression on his fact was mock hurt.

“Ow! you’re so mean Evan.” I shook my head and stuck my tongue out at him. Jimmy chuckled and opened the door, letting me go first.

“Y’know, maybe I wouldn’t be so mean if you weren’t such a, big person?” Jimmy raised his eyebrows and shoved his hands in his pockets as we walked to the car.

“Big person?” He asked, as we climbed into the car.

I just nodded, grabbing my seat belt and strapping it in, “You’re so tall and just, huge? Like a fucking brick wall.” I giggled lightly, leaning over and poking him in the chest.

“Hey, no language like that around the baby missy, we don’t need this little one coming out with any bad habits.” Jimmy playfully teased.

“Jimmy. it’s our kid, of course it’s gonna have problems. You should know that off the bat.” I told him, shooting Jimmy a grin as he chuckled and shook his head.

As we drove to the clinic, we were passing fields of grass, the wind blowing my hair as the radio was turned up loudly, and we passed a field of ducks.

“Holy shit! Look Evan! It’s a Stallion Duck!” Jimmy exclaimed, pointing to a huge duck. I laughed hard and began to snort. Placing my hand over my nose, I closed my eyes and blushed. I couldn’t help it.

“Oh lord, not the Stallion Ducks again.” I joked making Jimmy look at me quickly, rolling his eyes. I smiled to myself and began to sing along to a song that came on the radio. My hand rested on my swelling belly as we continued driving.

“Ah, nice to see you Miss Noel come on back with me and we’ll get you settled.” Doctor Follet smiled; he had a clipboard and waved me and Jimmy into the back. My palms were sweaty and I was nervous beyond words.

The ultrasound technician came in and instructed me on what to do. I lifted my shirt and she placed a cold gel on my belly. I sucked in a quick breath and got really nervous when a little image popped up on the screen, then nurse pressed down on my belly.

“Okay, as you can see there, that’s the baby’s skull and it’s backbone…” The nurse went on and I felt tears well up in my eyes.

All too soon, it was over. The cold gel was off my belly and I had a picture of my baby in my hand. When I looked up, I saw Jimmy brush at his eyes and a smile came to my face. Had he really been crying? Of course he’d never tell me.

“I can’t believe it.” I whispered, holding the sonogram over my head and looking at it. It made tears sting my eye again, but I really didn’t care.

“Can’t believe what?” Jimmy asked, lying down next to me.

“That we’re going to be parents before long.” I mumbled quietly as I tilted my head and looked at the ring, “And I’m going to be married soon.” I mummbled under my breath.

Jimmy sat up and leaned down, kissing my forehead. “Don’t worry Evan, everything’ll work out. I promise.” Jimmy told me, making me smile.

I looked at my ring one more time and then back at the sonogram. My hands found their way to my belly and a slow smile spread across my face. I sure as hell didn’t know what I was getting myself into but I think I’m going to like it.
