“"Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in
No longer needed here so where do we go?
Will you take a journey tonight; follow me past the walls of death?
But girl, what if there is no eternal life?”

Matt smiled as he looked up from his pregnant girlfriend’s stomach and looked into her gorgeous brown eyes. Taking his hand he placed it to her cheek and used his thumb to stroke her cheek. A smile formed onto her lips as another smile replaced the one Matt had a moment ago.

“That was beautiful.” Darla, Matt’s girlfriend of eleven years cooed at him.

Matt nodded his head and smiled at his beautiful girlfriend while placing his hand on her stomach. Matt took a deep breath before returning his gaze back to Darla, “Babe.” He murmured.

“Yeah honey.” Darla smiled scooting herself to the edge of the sofa.

Matt watched as Darla pushed herself up from the sofa and stretched. His eyes kept glued to her form as she waddled through their small apartment to the kitchen. Matt chewed on his lower lip as he pushed himself up from the sofa and followed Darla. Leaning into the doorway he folded his arms over his chest, “Babe, I need to—“ Matt was cut off by the front door being banged on.

“Who the hell is that?” Darla snapped looking over at Matt.

Matt shrugged as he frowned a little. He couldn’t find it in his heart to tell Darla what was going. What her brother had drugged him into. The situation he had found himself in with everything lately. Matt walked over to the door and pulled it open seeing Brian, Darla’s twin brother standing there. His shoulder length black hair, sprayed down with what seemed like a ton of hairspray. On his right stood a tall lanky man, Matt’s best friend, Jimmy. His spiked, short black hair in a mess, as he wore a beanie to cover the mess beneath.

“Ready bro?” Brian asked Matt as he made his way into the tiny apartment.

Matt turned around as he stared at Brian. Matt could tell Brian knew he hadn’t told Darla anything. Brian huffed tossing his right hand into the air in pure rage, “You didn’t fucking tell her, Matt?” Brian shouted.

“Don’t come into my home fucking shouting, Brian.” Matt warned his other best friend.

“You needed to tell her, dude. She has to know before we do this.” Brian snapped.

“Don’t you fucking think I know?” Matt scolds his best friend giving him a warning look with his eyes.

Matt’s gaze went from Brian to Darla who was standing right behind her brother. Matt dropped his head with shame and fear. Fear of doing this and not returning to his girlfriend and their unborn daughter. Shame for not telling her beforehand. A long dreadful sigh escaped Matt’s lips as he looked up meeting Darla’s teary eyes. He could feel his heart shattering, but this was all to blame on himself.

“Tell. Me. What?” Darla managed to choke out, holding her emotions the best she could.

Matt inhaled deeply as he looked at Brian. Brian nodded as he turned around and kissed his sister and walked out with Jimmy. “Bye Darls, you’re still my secret lover!” Jimmy called out trying to lighten the mood a little.

Darla let a faint giggle escape as she forced a weaken smile on her face, “You too, Jimmy.” She whispered below a faint.

Once the door had closed Matt turned to face Darla. “I got fired from the garage, Darls. We have no income. We need money before our daughter is brought into the world.” Matt dreadfully speaks out.

“Then find another job, Matt. It’s not that hard.”

Matt sighed shaking his head, “Darla it isn’t that easy. Joe made sure I couldn’t get a job.”

“Damn it, Matt. What the fuck are you telling me?” Darla screamed out in anger.

Matt squinted his eyes at Darla clearing his throat. Fists clenched at his sides, teeth pushed together. “Don’t. Fucking. Worry.” Matt sneered out before turning around.

Matt walked to the door pulling it open and disappearing as the door flew closed. He jogged down the stairs and headed to the ‘getaway’ car. Matt climbed into the backseat and leant back as he closed his eyes. This wasn’t what he wanted. He didn’t want it to turn out like this before he went to do this shit. He felt the car splutter out as he looked over his shoulder to see Darla on the step screaming for him. His heart broke completely into, as tears fell from his eyes. He prayed to god, that his girlfriend would be there waiting when this was over.

I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry (a melody, a memory, or just one picture)

Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over

Trials in life, questions of us existing here, don't wanna die alone without you here
Please tell me what we have is real

The words replayed through Darla’s head. She couldn’t believe that Matt had walked out after saying that to her. The song he had written for little Abagail, kept replaying through her mind. Darla frowned as she waddled to the sofa and plopped down onto it. Sitting there lost in her thoughts, Darla leant back into the sofa placing her hands on her swollen stomach.

Deciding to drown out her thoughts. Darla decided to turn the TV on, as she flipped the channel over to the TV5 news station. Tossing the controller over to her side she adjusted herself to where she was more comfortable than before. Her eyes glued to the television as she listened to the anchor giving the news, announcing a burglary. Darla’s mouth dropped when she saw the face on the news. Matt. Was all she could think, it was Matt. He had…had went and robbed a liquor store.

Darla managed to push herself up from the sofa as she begin to pace. Her thoughts racing, her heart aching from what she had just witnessed on TV. Nothing could ever her prepare her for this. For her own boyfriend doing something that stupid. Darla finally begin to settle, as the hurt was being replaced with anger. She just wanted to rip Matt’s head off. Just as she was about sit back on the sofa, a sharp pain ripped through her lower abdomen.

Doubling over, Darla screamed out in agonizing pain. She had no idea what to do. Her father was out of town and her step-mother was at a parent/teacher meeting for her step-sister. She screamed louder clenching to the arm of the deep brown, leather sofa. She could feel something wet trickling down her leg as she looked to see small drops of blood hitting her toes. Slowly turning herself, Darla managed to grab her phone hitting her step-mother, Suzy’s number.

“Hello sweetheart.” Suzy greeted.

“I. Need. Help.” Darla managed to faintly whisper before she collapsed.

Her head smacking the hardwood floor below, her back pounding against the same floor. A faint scream escaped her tightly pressed lips. Darla stared above as a white light shown over her. Her eyes began to shut as everything, every pain, drifted away from her. As Darla drifted towards the white light.

It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over

Five years later;

The day had finally come. The day Matt had been looking forward to since he had been put in prison for the robbery. When he had learned of Darla’s passing, he blamed himself. He had tried so many ways to commit suicide but his cell mate, blocked each attempt Matt made. After a year of therapy, Matt finally came to terms with his girlfriend’s death.

“Sanders.” A voice snaps Matt out of his thoughts.

Matt’s head snaps up as he looked at the guard standing at the cell door. “It’s time.” The guard smiled.

Matt gathered his things and giving his goodbye to his cell mate, which saved his life. Matt watched the door open up as he stepped out and followed the guard to his freedom. So many emotions coursed through his body. Happiness, sadness, anxiety, and much more. Happiness to finally meet his daughter for the first time in five years. Sadness for not being able to see Darla again, just her headstone and pictures. Anxiety for being out in the real world again.

The two stopped at the door that leads out of the prison. Matt took a deep breath as he looked over at the guard as he handed him everything he had come in with. “Good luck, Sanders.”

Matt nodded his head at the guard and sighed. Stepping outside he began walking as he saw a small crowd beyond the gates. A few signs waving, one caught his eye. Welcome home daddy! was being waived by a small girl. Her hair was a small ways past her shoulders; locks of curls covered her gorgeous brown hair. A smile formed onto Matt’s eyes lit up noticing it was his daughter.

Matt smiled as he broke out into a sprint and began running for his daughter. Once he landed at her he dropped everything in his arms picking Abagail up and holding her in his arms. He smiled as he pulled back a little and kissed her forehead, “Hi daddy.” The small fiver year old named Abagail screamed to her daddy.

Matt jolted a little as he chuckled at his daughter. “Thank you sweetheart.” Matt smiled kissing her forehead one more time.

Matt smiled greeting each friend that had come, and his family. He kept his daughter in his arms as he lent down and grabbed his stuff. Matt walked to the car as he put his daughter in her booster seat and climbed in beside of her. He looked up front seeing Brian as he smiled at his best friend. In the end, Matt had lost a soul he loved so dearly. But gained a newborn soul that he loved even more. He would always seize the day, every day he lived.
