An Epic of Time Wasted

Leap of faith

You would think being up all night I would be exhausted, but I was wide awake. I peeled my eyes from the t.v. Screen noticing my coffee cup was empty. I dragged my body from the couch, seeing it was 7:30 already. I sat my cup in the sink and headed for the bathroom, taking a quick shower. I tried my best not to think about any of this too much. On top of possibly finding my birth family I have never flown before, or even been out of New York. I quickly dressed and grabbed my suitcase. Making my way one last time through my tiny apartment making sure I didn't leave anything on. Once satisfied I slipped out my door locking it behind me and headed down the stairs to the front door of my complex. I shuddered when I opened the door stepping out onto the sidewalk, being met by the freezing October air. I sat myself on the steps thankful when I saw a car pull up not even five minutes later. A chauffeur stepped out, walking around to the passenger side opening the door for me. I thanked him as he took my bag and I took a seat on the plush leather seats of the car. I stuck my earphones into my ears as I let avenged sevenfold sing away my stress. No matter how I felt, their music always made it better. An hour later we were at the airport, I grabbed my bag from the driver and made my way Into the airport. I was overwhelmed as I walked into the swarm of people. I searched for the ticket kiosk, fearing I wouldn't find it in time and miss my flight. I guess my confusion was no secret, I felt someone walk up next to me leaning in.

" Need help?" I looked up to see a handsome man probably in his late twenties ask me. I felt my cheeks heat up in embarrassment.

" I'm looking for the ticket kiosk" I said quietly. He smiled warmly and pointed me in the right direction, before turning and walking off. I claimed my ticket and went through the joyless experience of airport security check. I always heard people complain about it, and now I knew why. I rushed to my terminal thanking god I just made it in time as the last few people were being loaded into the plane. The lady scanned my ticket and I made my way down to the plane taking my designated seat. to my relief the plane ride wasn't that bad. I kept my headphones in and closed my eyes, imaging I was somewhere else. Once we landed I opened my window smiling wide as I looked out to see the bright blew skies before me. The air looked so clear and inviting, unlike the smoggy mess I was accustomed to back home. I stepped off the plane and walked out into the airport terminal. The first thing that caught my attention was that everybody was dressed in shorts and t shirts, and here I was wrapped up like a marshmallow. I grabbed my suitcase from the baggage claim and made a beeline for the bathroom to change into more weather appropriate attire. After I changed I made my way outside the airport searching for a cab, when I noticed another chauffeur holding a sign with my name. I climbed In The car, starring in awe the whole time as I stared out the window drinking in the gorgeous scenery. We came to a stop in front of a enormous office building. I stepped out and was met by a petite dark haired woman.

" Ah Lexa! So nice to finally meet you! How was your trip?" She asked, leading me Inside and down to her office.

" It was good" I answered shyly. I was still nervous about this whole thing and had a hard time hiding it no matter how hard I tried to.

" Well in a few minutes their going to come In and take a DNA sample from you for the paternity test, but first I want to talk to you about some things" she said. I nodded In agreement as I looked around her office. Not only was she a private investigator but she was also a licensed psychiatrist according to the dozens of diplomas and plaques on her walls. She poured me a glass of water, offering me a seat as she sat herself behind the desk.

" Now I know this is a lot to take in Lexa. If at anytime it becomes too much or you feel uncomfortable just let me know, okay?" She softly stated. I couldn't seem to find my voice so I once again nodded in understanding.

" Now do you remember your birth family at all?" She asked, eyeing me carefully.

" no, I was raised in an orphanage my whole life. From what I was told I was left as an infant on their doorstep Christmas Day" I said, shuddering at the memory of that god forsaken place. Her gaze turned sorrowful as she listened.

" Well Lexa I don't want to divulge too much until we get the paternity test back, but if you are indeed who we are looking for I will be able to shes light on the reason for the terrible events that occurred" she said. Before I had a chance to respond there was a soft knock on the door as a nurse walked in wheeling a metal cart behind her.

" Hope I'm not interrupting, but if its a good time I'm ready to take the sample" the nurse softly spoke. Nancy nodded to the nurse to continue. She grabbed a long cotton swab from her tray, swabbing the inside of my mouth before placing it in a large ziploc bag. With that she left, shutting the door behind her.

" Now I see here that you are twenty eight years old, and when you were abandoned you were believed to be three weeks old" she said, almost as if she were just talking to herself. I was slightly taken aback for a moment that she knew so much about me, it was a tad bit unnerving.

" uh, uh ya" I stuttered out causing her to giggle at my reaction.

" Sorry I know this is weird, but I'm here to help you. I had to do my homework" she said. I smiled at her, remaining quiet.

" We're pretty much done for the day. I will bring you back in tomorrow for the paternity results. So for now you are free to enjoy the rest of your day. Your hotel and transportation has already been taken care of. And this is for you" she said, sliding a envelope across the desk to me. I opened it pulling the card out. It was a blank greeting card with a portrait of colorful flowers on the front. I opened it causing a gift card to fall out sliding Into my lap. The card read " thank you so much for coming out here and giving us this chance. I can never thank you enough. Enclosed is a card with five hundred dollars. Go out and enjoy your time here and hopefully I will see you soon" I closed the card and looked back up to nancy.

" I can't take this" I stuttered, feeling for some reason guilty for receiving such a lavish gift.

" No no Lexa that's for you, from the family that brought you here. They want you to have it" she smiled warmly, standing up to make her way to the door.

" Now you go and relax, ill see you in the morning"
