Seize The Day

A New Beginning

Johnny’s POV:
The present…

I stared down at the floor not knowing what to say, or even where to begin. Things have been so blurry lately that I wasn’t even sure what day of the week it was anymore. I picked up my acoustic guitar that I had laid next to me and starting strumming the opening cords to a song that my band had recently written. I stopped and looked out the window. The clouds were rolling in so if I wanted to do this I would have to do it now before the storm hit and I had to leave.

“You never got the chance to hear this song before, and I wanted to play it for you now. I was never much of a singer… well I didn’t think so anyways but you always seemed to like my voice. I was going to sing you Warmness on the Soul since that one is your favorite, but you've heard that a million times and this is something new.” I said with a little smile. “I hope you like it.” I picked up on strumming the guitar again.

I closed my eyes and began to sing the lyrics to ‘Seize the Day’. I never realized how much this song would mean to me now, to any of us really. When we began to write it, it was just another song to put on the record. But after everything happened, we went back and revised it and the meaning behind it now means so much. Of course we had other songs that meant something to us, like 'Afterlife' or 'Dear God'. But it was nothing like this.

I got half way through the song before breaking down. This was the part that was always the hardest for me to get through.

“So, what if I never hold you, yeah. Or kiss your lips again? So I never want to leave you. And the memories of us to see, I beg don't leave me. Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost. It's empty and cold without you here too many people to ache over. Trials in life, questions of us existing here. Don't wanna die alone without you here, please tell me what we have is real.” I finished singing and set my guitar back down next to me and hung my head, not knowing what to do, or even say next.

Matt, Brian, Zacky and Jimmy walked over to me then. Zacky extended his hand to me to help me up. I accepted it and stood. We all stood there in silence for a few minutes, embraced in a hug. These were my brothers, my family and the ones who have gotten me through the darkest moments of my life. Without them I wouldn’t even be here right now.

Flash forward to 3 years ago…
Shannon’s POV:

I got settled in, putting most of my clothes in Matts closet and dresser. I’d be staying in his room with him till I found a place of my own. He offered his bed to me but I declined, I already took up most of the space in his dresser and closet, I wasn’t about to take his bed over too. He argued with me over it, but he knows just how stubborn I am and I wouldn’t give in.

The guys were in the kitchen getting the plates and things ready for dinner as I sat on the edge of Matts bed and couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by everything. Just yesterday I was in New York, living with my boyfriend, now ex, and needing to get away from his jealousy and abusive ways. I left home wanting to get away from everyone, away from everything and start a new life. Now I’m going to be living in a house with five guys, five of my best friends since childhood. I knew these guys since I was 6. Our parents were best friends so they always arranged play dates for us. When we were teenagers we would stay out late till our mom's yelled for us to come in. This all would be a huge change for me, but a change that I defiantly needed.

I got up and walked to the kitchen where everyone was. They were in the middle of a conversation about who knows what. More than likely day to day guy things, you know stuff like cars, sports, sex and naked chicks. I took a chair next to Johnny and helped myself to what was on the table for dinner, not bother to join in on their conversation. I didn’t have much of an appetite really, but I know if I didn’t try to eat something then the guys would question me and I didn’t feel like answering questions although I know they mean well by it.
I just stared down at my plate, moving the food around with my fork. Johnny looked at me and nudged my arm lightly. I looked over at him and he gave me a smile and I smiled back. He could tell something was up. He was always the one to see through my bad moods, and always the one to make me feel better too. The other guys, well they knew when something was up too but they never wanted to make matters worse. I was lucky getting to grow up with these guys. When I had family troubles I would sneak out of my house at night, climb out my window and run to Matt’s house right across the street. The guys would always be in his garage practicing with their band. I would let myself in and take a seat on the floor and listen to them play for hours until I thought it would be safe to return home.
These guys were so protective of me in school, when all the boys in school tried to get with me they would always put them in their place. Because of them I never had a boyfriend in school. Not until I decided to move to New York. Now I wished that I hadn’t.

When everyone was finished eating I cleared everything from the table and loaded the dishes in the dish washer. And started to put the leftovers into containers.

“Ummm, what do you think you’re doing small fry?” Matt asked standing up and walking over to me.

“I’m helping to put stuff away.” I stated.

“I don’t think so. You go sit down and relax, don’t even worry about any of this alright?” He asked and kissed my forehead lightly.

I wasn’t about to argue. Mostly because I knew he was as stubborn as I was and an argument between the two of us would never end. I turned to walk out of the kitchen but decided against it and needed to get in the final word.

“Oh, by the way.” I said and smacked Matt upside the head. “Don’t call me small fry ok MATTY.” He rubbed the back of his head and laughed.

“Ouch. Don’t be so rough.” He said still laughing.

“Well, from what I heard you like it rough.” I said and turned and walked out of the kitchen. Zacky, Jimmy, Brian and Johnny all laughed.

“Don’t even go there with that one!” Matt said.

“Hey, it’s not my fault we all know the truth.” I said as I peeked my head back into the kitchen and gave him a wink. He just shook his head, gave me an evil glare and pointed at me. So I gave him my sweetest smile.

The guys cleaned up the kitchen as I got in the shower. I stood there under the warm water just letting it run over me as I shut my eyes. Things were going to be different now and I knew it, it was just hard to grasp because I haven’t had a “normal” life since I was 15. I had the guys back in my life and I knew that they were going to do everything that they could to make sure I was safe and happy, just like when we were younger.

I turned the shower off and let the tub fill up as I lay back in the water. I could hear the guys in the next room arguing back and forth about something. It sounded like they were arguing over the TV, who wanted to play video games and who wanted to watch movies. Whatever it was I know it won’t be ending anytime soon, unless someone cut in to tell them to keep it down.

I reached up and turned the water off and sat back again. I closed my eyes as I sank down into the water letting it cover my body. It was peaceful here, I couldn’t hear them arguing under the water. I was interrupted a few minutes later by a loud pounding on the door. I didn’t bother answering. Maybe if I didn’t they would get the hint and just walk away. But whoever it was didn’t get the hint and pounded again and proceeded to open the door.

“Are you alive behind that curtain?” I heard Zacky say and the toilet bowl seat hit the back of the toilet.

“Yeah, as alive as I’m going to be.” I said and closed the curtain more.

“I knocked but I didn’t know if you heard me at all so I just came in. Had to piss bad and couldn’t wait much longer.” He told me.

“Well, you’re lucky that I’m not naked in here or anything.” I said with a laugh.

“HA. Very funny.” He said finishing up and flushing the toilet. He left the bathroom, shutting the door behind him.

I laid back again and let out a little sigh. “I suppose I should get out before anyone else interrupts.” I quietly said to myself and stood up, letting the water out and wrapping a towel around myself.

The guys started arguing again. Yep, they were defiantly playing video games, most likely Call of Duty. I knew I was in for a long night because they are usually up for hours playing. I took my time getting dressed and ran a comb through my hair. I took one last look in the mirror and couldn’t recognize who was looking back at me. My skin was pale white and I had dark circle under my eyes indicating that I haven’t slept much in the past week. Maybe that would all change tonight.

JOHNNY’S POV:

I gave up on the video games and left the guys in the living room to play. I ended up running into Shannon as she was coming out of the bathroom.

“Hey. I don’t think you want to go in there with them. They are in war mode.” I told her with a smile.

“Yeah, I figured.” She said with a weak smile.

“Do you want to hang out in my room? Watch a movie or something? I promise it will be more quiet in there.”

“I don’t think so.” She said as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I think I’m just going to call it a night, I’m beat!

“Is everything ok? I mean besides being tired and all, you alright babe?” I asked her and rubbed her shoulder.

“Yeah. Just over thinking things I guess.” She said and put her hand over mine that was on her shoulder.

“Try not to think ok. Get some rest. Tomorrow is another day and if you need to talk at all my room is at the end of the hall.” I said and pulled her in for a hug. She wrapped her arms around me tight and rested her head against my shoulder.

She didn’t say anything; she just stood there hugging me. I can’t begin to imagine what she was thinking, or how she was feeling. Brian walked down the hall and saw us. I looked at him and he looked worried.

“She ok?” He mouthed.

I shook my head yes knowing that if I said no everyone else would worry too. And I know she didn’t want that. She needed sleep, some time alone, and if the guys were going to worry she wouldn’t get any of that. Brian continued on to his room as Shannon pulled away from me.

“I’ll see you in the morning.” She said and reached up to kiss my cheek.

“Have a goodnight babe.” I told her as she turned and went towards Matt’s room.

I knew it would take time for her to get use to this new living arrangement and to get use to the fact that her ex will no longer be around to ruin everything. Now it was a matter of time till she actually opened up and talked to someone about everything.
