Unbound - The Wild Ride

Chapter 12

"Katherine," Matt gently tapped his knuckles on the bathroom door as he pressed his forehead against the frame. "Open up." His hand dropped to his side as she slowly pulled the door open.

Her face was still that of shock from what just took place, not believing it had actually happened. "How did she know where I live, Matt?" she asked, pressing past him and into the living room, wearing nothing but a pair of boy-cut panties and a black wife beater.

"I have no fucking idea," he followed behind her.

"You had to tell her SOMETHING about me..." she stared at him, waiting for an answer.

Matt rubbed the back of his neck firmly, "She saw where I was looking at the website for the club...with you pasted all over the fucking thing."

Kat's skin flushed at his admission. "Someone at Max's had to give her my address. Who in the hell would be that stupid?"

"MATT OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!!!" Val beat her fists against the door with brutal force, screaming at the top of her lungs.

"God damn," he jumped slightly, startled by the sudden noise.

"She's going to get me fucking evicted!" Kat screamed at the door, looking to Matt, waiting for him to do something...anything.

"The only way she's going to leave peacefully is if I go with her," he said regretfully.

Kat didn't want him to leave...but she trusted that he would know how to handle the situation better than she would, so she nodded at him. "Do what you have to do, Matt."

Matt grabbed his keys from the coffee table before he gently placed his hand on Kat's stomach and kissed her lips softly. "I'm sorry about all this," he told her quietly.

"I know," she whispered back. She watched Matt unlock the door and slip through it, cautiously making his way to Val.

Val's skin was red with fury, her cheeks stained with a steady stream of tears carrying her dark mascara with it to her chin. "Come on," he told her, putting his large arm around her shoulders as they descended down the flight of stairs, Michelle following behind them.

Kat pushed back a black curtain and used her fingers to slightly spread the blinds apart, looking to the parking lot. She saw Matt helping Val into the passenger seat of his car as Michelle climbed into Val's car to follow behind them. Within minutes, both cars were parading out of the dark parking lot. She began to cry softly as she let the blinds fall back into place, turning towards her stereo.

She squatted down, pushing the play button as Godsmack's "Running Blind" began to play softly as she threw her body heavily down onto the couch.

Can't find the answers
I've been crawling on my knees
Looking for anything
To keep me from drowning
Promises have been turned to lies
Can't even be honest inside
Now I'm running backward
Watching my life wave me goodbye

Running blind
I'm running blind
Somebody help me see I'm running blind

Searching for nothing
Wondering if I'll change
I'm trying everything
But everything still stays the same
I thought if I showed you I could fly
Wouldn't need anyone by my side
Now I'm running backward
With broken wings I know I'll die

"Why?" Val looked to Matt, still sobbing as they drove back to Huntington.

His eyes stayed straight ahead of him, the roadside in a blur as he sped down the highway. "How many times do I have to tell you that I didn't plan on any of this happening?"

"Am I not good enough for you anymore?"

"This isn't even about YOU, Valary," he felt frustration wash over his body.

"Were all the times you told me you loved me nothing but bullshit? Because I would never do this to you..." she continued, but cutting herself short when she saw the broken skin on Matt's knuckles. "What happened?" she asked, quickly reaching her hand to touch his on the steering wheel.

He jerked his hand away from hers and placed it in his lap out of her line of sight. "Nothing," he answered flatly.

"You fought over her?" Val quickly looked away from him, resting her elbow against the glass of the window next to her, holding her heavy head in her hand. "Unbelievable," she mumbled under her breath.

The last stretch of the ride was made in an eerie silence. No radio, no talking...it even seemed still outside of the rushing car. Val noticed the streets he was taking were leading her back to her parents' house.

"I don't want to go there," she objected.

"Val......" he started to protest.

"Just for tonight," she cut him off. "Please just let me stay with you tonight."

"Just tonight," he agreed, turning down a side street to head towards the house they both once shared. He knew she would try in vain to change the way he felt and it made his heart began to writhe in pain. He would always love her, but not how he once did.
