Dancing With Your Demons

The Clock Struck 12

My world consists of vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, etc. Anything magical you can name, and it exists. The monster in the closet, under the bed, in the dark. It all exists.

Humans are sold like pets. We’re stripped down and dressed in slutty clothes to show off our skin and so our scent comes off more powerfully.

What am I, you may ask? I’m half-human, half-witch. My mother was a witch, and my father was a human. So I don’t qualify to be a full witch, therefore am stripped down just like any other human. Unfair? I think so, but what can I do about it?

The rulers of my world are the notorious Avenged Sevenfold. They’re a band of vampires that show no mercy to humans. They enforce the laws of the world. They live in Bat Country, in the City of Evil. Once you’re in the City of Evil, it’s nearly impossible to get out. If you’re a human, and you have a rare blood type, you’re taken to an auction and sold off to buyers. Or, if you’re half of a ruler. Like half-werewolf, vampire, witch, wizard, etc.

I’ve been hiding from the Collectors since I was twelve. The Collectors are the ones that capture the rare bloods and half-beings like me.

Exactly nine years ago Avenged Sevenfold came looking for me. My parents had sent me to one of our friend’s house. They were a married warlock-witch couple. I wasn’t there to watch them brutally murder my parents, but I did see the bloody aftermath of it. They had beheaded my mother and shot my father. A lot of blood was on the walls, floors and furniture. Any excess blood was drained from their bodies.

I was currently living with that same warlock-witch couple. My cover-up life was: my name was Hayley Lake, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lake. I was a witch in training. I was nineteen years of age. My parents were killed in a fire.

My real life? I’m Jade Elizabeth Carson. My parents were murdered and I live an undercover life hiding from the Collectors and Avenged Sevenfold. I’m half-witch and I am twenty-two years of age. Because of my being half-witch, I had the ability to read minds.

On with the story.

I was sleeping soundly in my room when I heard it: the thoughts of intruders, trying to be sneaky around the house. I gasped and shot up in bed. I quickly changed into jeans and a t-shirt, slipping on some shoes. I rushed to my “adoptive parents” room.

I shook them to wake them up. “Wake up!” I whispered loudly. “Wake up! I said wake up damn it!” I pinched both of them and covered their mouths as they started to scream. “Be quiet. Someone’s here. They’re outside of the house. I can sense them.” Both of their eyes went wide. They quickly got changed. Dad (I always called them mom and dad) grabbed his wand, preparing for battle. Mom pressed the silent alarm and drank some potion that keeps you awake and alive for a few hours. I drank some too.

As we started stealthily creeping out of the room, I tip-toed back into their room and snuck Dad’s Ax cologne into my sweatshirt.

I heard the thoughts of people battling. You could hear the muffled sounds of suffocation and the violent sounds of ripping flesh and the snapping of necks. I shuddered and tried to shut off my intruding mind, so I wouldn’t see the bloody images filtering from others’ minds to mine.

Once we all reached the bottom of the stairs, Dad yelled out, “Avada Kedavra!” One of the vampires dropped dead. It was so cool! Some of the enemies seemed to notice us after one of their men just dropped dead.

Some raced towards us. Others continued fighting.

“Jade, go upstairs and hide in your room,” Mom whispered to me. I looked at her like she was crazy. “They’re here for you. Go hide, now. That’s an order.”

Angry tears brimming my green eyes, I ran upstairs as fast as I could and into my room. I shut and locked the door, including my balcony door. I sat on my bed and curled my knees to my face. I rested my chin on them and let myself tune into Mom’s thoughts.

She was fighting a werewolf. It was beautiful. Pure black, with piercing blue eyes. I noticed her battle wounds through her eyes: her left inner wrist was gushing blood from what looked like to be teeth bite marks. I assumed it was the werewolf. I didn’t see Avenged Sevenfold anywhere…but that didn’t make me feel any better. In fact it made me a hell of a lot more scared.

I left Mom’s mind and returned to my own. I tightened my ponytail. I did that a lot when I was nervous/scared. My stomach was rolling. My fingers kept fidgeting.

I completely froze when I heard a dark chuckle from the other side of the room. I turned my head slowly and saw The Rev. Thee Reverend Tholomew Plague. In the flesh. He was a part of Avenged Sevenfold, and he was a werewolf. My eyes went wide. THEY WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO FIND ME!

“What are you doing here?” I spat angrily. I wasn’t going to show my fear. This is the moment that sat on the line of my freedom and my imprisonment.

The Rev smiled darkly and chuckled again. “For you, of course. Why else would we be here?”

“To be the complete dickheads that you are.” I crossed my arms over my chest.

I saw The Rev’s lip twitch. Before I could stop it he had me pinned to the wall, his hand closed around my throat. I gasped for breath as he lifted me up by my neck. “Watch that mouth of yours, or I’ll occupy it with something else.” That made me want to throw up.

“Let her go,” said a voice from my doorway. I didn’t recognize the voice. “I don’t want her damaged.”

The Rev released my throat, causing me to fall to the floor. I coughed and tried to start breathing normally. I could see myself through the unknown voice’s mind. I was hunched over, gasping for breath.

I looked over to the voice and felt my stomach drop. M. Shadows stood there. I took in his thick muscles, gorgeous hazel eyes, and his lip ring. Like what you see? His mind said. I jumped back slightly. How did he know about my gift? He laughed. “Why do you think we came searching for you? Your beauty? I have to admit, its reason enough for me, but the original reason to find you was because of your gift.”

I gulped down my salvia and scurried into the closet corner. Shadows rolled his eyes and came over to me. I tried my best to use my weight to keep me on the floor, but he picked me up easily and flipped me over his shoulder.

“Let me go!” I screamed, hitting his back violently with my fists.

“I don’t think I will, baby.” I then let out a long string of obscene suggestions, while they were casually leaving the house.

Before Shadows walked out of the door, I saw Mrs. Lake. There was fear in her blue eyes. Fear of losing the woman she’d come to feel as a daughter. I projected one thought to her mind before the door was slammed shut: stay alive.

Shadows casually walked down the stairs and towards the van waiting there. Inside, I could hear the grandfather clock striking twelve. Midnight. The bewitching hour. I smiled.

Shadows roughly threw me into the back of a black van. There, Johnny Christ tied my hands and feet up with rope. I narrowed my eyes at him, a smile hidden in my eyes. As Shadows and Synyster Gates argued about whether they should replace the ropes with cuffs, I focused on the witch within me. I closed my eyes and thought about a raging fire that was burning rope. The rope of my hands and feet sparked and burnt a part of the rope that freed me. Before Johnny could react I grabbed one of the burning pieces of rope and flung it at him.

I ignored the fact that my wrists and legs had been slightly burned in the process and attempted an escape. I lunged for the open backdoors of the van and landed face-first on the asphalt. Trying my best to ignore the searing pain in my face, I pulled myself up and made a run for the house. Probably not the best direction to go, but I wasn’t going to run anywhere else, where other vampires or werewolves could get me.

I could hear every running step they took. I could hear my heart pounding rapidly and feel my legs screaming from the agony of the speed. None of that mattered though, not if it meant I at least tried.

I ran around the house and into the labyrinth. The hedges were taller than all of Avenged Sevenfold, including Shadows, so I figured this was a good place to hide.

Wrong.

I got lost somewhere in the middle, I assumed. Every time I’d take a path, it’d be a dead end. My lungs were aching from lack of breath, and my legs felt like Jell-O underneath me.

“Shit.” I whispered my hands on my knees for support.

“What’s wrong sweetheart?” I jumped at Synyster Gates voice. Damn it! He was blanking his mind so I couldn’t hear his thoughts, so he could sneak up on me. I turned towards him and memorized his look: short dark hair, thick muscles, chocolate brown eyes, topped off with a fedora hat and smirk.

“Get away from me.” I said fiercely, backing up until I felt the leaves of the hedge on my back.
Synyster’s smirk widened. He spoke while he walked towards me. “Darling, we’re never gonna be away from you again. You’ll be ours once we get out of here.”

My heart beat quickened as he reached me and touched my face. I closed my eyes and pretended like I wasn’t there and I wasn’t about to be taken by the people that I’d been hiding from for nine years.

“Don’t worry sweetie. Everything will seem normal again soon enough.”

I opened my eyes just in time for Synyster’s fist to connect with my face and for me to pass out.
